Other costs of leaving have also increased and the university
+ @' K% a4 @6 e. u& h- Gincreases the tuition fee by few percent every year and international
8 E% h: N# M$ h2 Q# C$ F& mdifferential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this,
U. w! J( l7 h2 p0 t' b) athe fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers
1 I3 W7 d9 c4 M3 w& Sand most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were 3 ]$ T" |) a5 _( ?! m9 {: C2 r
asked to look for a residence on open market.. [ O/ k; f4 P
6 }/ [! N* U( C+ k$ Y& A5 oWhile the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has
1 ?" ]9 |" n/ F0 I* W/ Tincreased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid 2 I5 c1 `& g% s
exactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our ) t# X8 C4 C" P3 O' l( F
admission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students . `9 G4 f2 [+ h. I+ {0 F* M/ F
=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after ! J, A6 i1 @+ \% Y2 A2 w! W9 G
tuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just
% K: Z, v. t2 `; {: ~$ `imagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am # Q) \7 Y, e2 o
getting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of . U {! O7 c, V3 i. P
us) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was
' `& v' r$ e. j8 y" T, ~admitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.

Also have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of
# W' a- F0 j# f* OAlberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants
( I! n; B2 P' j3 T1 ]from different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate
! H+ s" N N% istudents are the main pillars of research work at the university.

My objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention

" y) q7 X/ H& D2 `especially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take V! X( V/ y6 M9 |
) ]8 `3 |. k6 [0 d3 ninitiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for
5 Z/ u) C# V& R4 s. `1 s: |7 tgraduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?
