When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and

While I was paying 340CAD/month for more than a year, I抦 paying ; X; {3 j, _* s- n8 h7 ^1 s
600CAD/month plus utilities right now, some thing around 700CAD/month.6 C9 Z% T2 ^$ Z- Q( F1 M$ r
# D6 I/ T/ J$ C2 hOther costs of leaving have also increased and the university
& E. A2 F/ X/ m& P" Hincreases the tuition fee by few percent every year and international 3 a5 \0 K, i$ G: {. d3 K3 s" h
differential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this, . d; l: T" e7 P# O
the fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers
+ }( A/ _& V3 e9 }% _! }7 E, gand most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were 4 F; d2 d& Z- G- c3 @% y
asked to look for a residence on open market.
! v8 W6 Q1 I% ^% c5 G2 Y) o4 G
3 a0 A& d9 W. w1 LWhile the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has
$ _, R) [/ D5 g$ X+ cincreased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid
/ l% \' K4 a1 R6 \& Q; texactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our P* N. w3 M* o/ h
admission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students ( i. U4 F" u/ M/ {! V
=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after , w, @% C; Q4 }% R2 b
tuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just
! @. `. s2 D- a! d. R' c& |: ^imagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am 5 z \! ~( ~5 T5 L, }9 G
getting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of
2 U5 @0 }1 D) i# _ m& k c" e: wus) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was , M) W8 b' n4 S
admitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.

Alberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants 8 ]9 J! y8 |! V! D) U4 b. ]
from different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate $ F! u; ^) F6 @# g
students are the main pillars of research work at the university.

My objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention " m. q( W* [8 a8 x
is to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and
2 l: x' u4 ?: a1 S* `" U5 Fespecially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take8 W* e0 h! c) j7 b# }- N
! ^. ^2 Z! y' t5 R* ainitiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for 5 L; l b R0 D" e" d
graduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?
