Today I was volunteering at a post office. A man in an old jacket with uncombed hair came to the counter. He had a wallet in his hand, and put it on the counter. He told me: - x; x7 k* u0 `. @
"I am going to send it back".
# V5 S/ W+ n% p9 V$ ^$ U4 o; mI did not understand what he meant by "it", because usually people would send a letter or a parcel back to the sender, and I did not see he had any of those. So I asked him:, o( y# j2 h* S# e1 P; D; \
"I am sorry, what are you sending back?"
& X0 ~5 D4 v( K* E/ H0 G) dHe said, "the Wallet, I am sending back the wallet." Then he added: "I am going to pay the postage." # r1 u/ V" W$ ]. Y0 e p1 t
"Oh, you found a wallet, and you are going to send it back to the person who lost it?"
* q, B7 u5 I9 u% C"Yes, I did."- i5 O$ s3 F, s5 W
Finally I understood: this dishevelled man found a wallet, and he was going to return it to the owner by post.
2 I! }+ P5 s( V/ L( o3 g" WHe took the ID card from the wallet, and showed me the address of the loser of the wallet. I saw there were several one-hundred bills in the wallet.
9 z$ E$ u. w: w- y. J7 Z# w# q U' Z"Are you going to take some money from the wallet to pay the postage?", j& J% B2 e/ a& }
"No, I am not. I do not do those things."! A) o- e6 m/ I% s! _
He took out his wallet, which was nearly worn-out, small, and almost empty. There were some coins inside.
- G) S- Y0 r% U! T5 V+ HI gave him a bubbled envelope, and instructed him where to write the addresses. He wrote the owner's address, but stopped at writing a return address. He asked:8 `! ~. o# i! Z7 _. h- X) }
"Is it okay that I do not write this part?"
W3 b. V+ h% }"Yes, you may." I thought he must want to be a nameless hero. But he said:8 |5 c: b8 {2 F/ T+ @8 R
"I do not have an address."7 L( `5 B8 J$ `2 s
I was surprised: "oh, where do you live?"
$ e, c6 R( k1 b( [! T- N2 bHe did not look up, and said: "I do not have a home."
0 ~7 A% M" t m9 EMy heart had a sudden jump. I realized that this is a homeless man who found money but was sending it back to the person who lost it.
