* M. M2 C* o. W2 {In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
4 e; k4 O1 ^6 REngagement Training.2 k" C0 _4 {% l

We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
" \& Y) C2 R# E(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood/ V/ A+ ~, M2 k: Q' N& H8 p
groups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
$ r1 X% M Y# Q/ v- N0 mtogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
: c& w* C ]% m# qCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.

Synopsis:

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
+ O6 x0 t( O' s! ePacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years
8 D: i% V; l0 N7 u! tof fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter! V$ g) K8 u" x1 ~/ Z
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the6 t& R# y" R* f4 K! U
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:8 o4 ~' v: i+ v4 K) g9 A
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter2 P2 _* x$ t: g, j6 a$ X
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
+ P9 E1 ^0 l% f6 a4 fisland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed9 w% \1 f/ q3 x! \
international peacekeeping operation.

& z/ S. E: o* H5 u IThis beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their( |9 i$ t. l* O; q* o' s2 D; Z
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people2 q" G/ q" v. L+ V/ L5 X Y3 n
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV

Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
6 H" _8 L* s2 I! Dimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs5 Y9 a/ _; \' w/ f4 `5 k
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!

- b: t b* Q, }0 rAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
& F0 e. ]7 b8 ?& P% r y6 ?success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
& J+ Y1 I8 X0 q) {' m: S1 h# jprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
* ?, E6 G. v$ u; {; F8 j6 fhands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
/ A5 X+ j( s' ]* i" q; ^0 a( vAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,( b& C M/ x. C" c
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
