I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.
( p# i/ @4 Z, {' DIn phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
. T4 G5 ?) X2 d9 q9 kEngagement Training.

, P5 V7 ]& V. L9 XWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
3 e! d& T: }5 l" G, J" T(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
9 t- b. B' m* t) [7 L; {0 xgroups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
4 _0 t, J) C7 s: i {together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
5 _' T, h$ `6 `3 q w& |+ kCommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.) ?2 G& T- T% ^, f4 a

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
" G" h" m6 W9 {* j1 [Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years5 ?% J- ]5 Z7 k+ P- e
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter& c$ [( m) U8 t7 h% P; i) | J
conflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the2 z# S8 N( d& y
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:0 {6 b" i# l( X% |9 n
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
1 `9 F+ x8 j p; ] z' A) B9 dIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the* M: _0 p$ k }8 j) U6 f! @- G
island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed
2 n" Z5 B5 W$ S, @international peacekeeping operation.
& o5 o( ?! _7 P; D4 n2 `. q9 u6 `; N& F) A; `! z: G
This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their, n: P& m; P+ \, |2 Z1 Z
own story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
% g7 ?8 Y6 U7 K( |5 [who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
5 g0 o9 a8 z5 e Rscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and+ h( X M, V- i
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
& e R% h8 ~: gimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs9 e* Z5 \1 i+ R8 d3 W3 J$ Z8 _
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!0 J1 C0 v6 {5 z/ ~
; r6 ]4 v4 ]! I6 `8 BAccording to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
! I6 ~5 K2 w0 V; r3 Y# v0 G; Rsuccess of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
3 [0 q, N/ I; f0 D2 y& ~. G* gprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the
5 X! @; S& _! i. X7 Ahands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
" g& d$ `; a+ ~; p" p' `8 c/ bAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,9 ?2 T0 G4 P/ x# S1 \. H4 j
so we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
