In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
0 D2 ?* _& O. A! bEngagement Training.: @% D! Z$ o1 I+ P4 D

We can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,
R d* F. I' I+ ?(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
- E( K$ n3 q) X5 Ggroups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work
3 y: W6 p. @! r4 V/ {4 E; btogether across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy
! t. L% z2 c$ E: F. ECommunities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.

Pacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years: ~2 ?6 Q; v3 Z) I4 j3 w
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
$ U! P' Q# o* R( h# T$ E6 zconflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the( P( ^- M I- Z" B0 f
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:
1 O5 ~5 j( ~2 @# l* l, B ?, Athey come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter
1 a( z# z) p: ~# QIain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
5 M( D1 _$ T7 k. lisland and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed# k( r3 T% M7 \$ u1 }( Y
international peacekeeping operation.& q4 n/ r' ?. a9 l, ~) T
, f4 Z- ~4 X9 F. X3 X
This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
! f0 }7 j% o: [' D9 pown story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people+ q6 _" ]1 R! @$ c) o% Q5 {
who brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
- i* v7 G. n1 S! b- Hscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and; b3 q" Z' m- B$ F/ V
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
% l: D* O% M7 x! ^ Jimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs9 o; c: v* S% C6 B f
and music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!
* \" o- O+ Y7 t
9 _" c, H/ K4 ?According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the
, ]4 F; M- U$ L( X5 osuccess of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
% ]! m5 _9 G% }, R6 q6 R) f3 K" ]1 o( Tprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the9 Z9 ?& `5 F; [. @8 O" j. s
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
4 L- c0 F( g* d8 H7 b- DAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
