I'd like to invite people to join our new Community Dialogue project.) A$ _5 i; `+ I; a
In phase 1 we have a couple of extra spots available for Community
5 y- E5 s6 g. j, S$ _Engagement Training.# X9 A8 Q$ n# ^2 ?, t0 z7 R
$ P! U u8 Q9 O; r: `& I5 W) jWe can accept a few people to join us this Friday (3~6 p.m.)and Saturday,6 Q, a) G# D b$ T
(9~3 p.m. ) to improve skills in building multicultural neighbourhood
: G) v3 T; u0 @- g, F& w: pgroups. We're especially focused on developing groups that can work% @3 ^1 R( u1 A2 w' `# t2 M! c
together across cultures to create community projects and Action for Healthy1 z& X n3 }) E! x" }
Communities can often support these projects with funding of up to $1,000.

Set on the remote Papua New Guinea Island of Bougainville in the South
! g0 n" d# r M3 }% K5 iPacific, "Bougainville Sky" is the story of how music helped overcome years# Y9 l/ M: q8 g% n2 T
of fear and distrust to rebuild peace in a war torn society. When bitter
. g2 K0 f4 t- n$ b* Z( gconflict on Bougainville Island ended in 1997, the combatants invited the0 O: @* f/ s; V' t: Z
international community to send in a Peacekeeping force on one condition:! @4 Q; F: m5 X2 g# F
they come unarmed. Amongst the Peacekeepers was young Australian songwriter! E5 W& J9 h* F$ @7 \3 G+ t! R! W7 K
Iain Campbell Smith, whose music and radio program became a legend on the
. ? [/ L3 w5 J Q% V$ M2 C8 [" @island and contributed to the success of the world¹s first unarmed' M9 I# U& x) a6 O7 u' q
international peacekeeping operation.
0 L3 O. Q3 ^: r; D9 p9 q+ [8 c$ @1 A8 P& x% L
This beautifully shot film allows the Bougainvillean people to tell their
6 o" p% ~9 @# K; c5 }0 t5 hown story and captures the struggles, the strength and the humor of a people
/ s, O6 n+ ?3 v G, \' h5 Xwho brought themselves back from the chaos of war. At a time when our TV
* @8 K* i, H, L: w7 fscreens are filled with images from the interventions in Iraq and, O t2 {" q) j; w% w
Afghanistan, the success story of the Bougainville peace process seems
1 u$ s) }1 `: v6 j& Yimprobable: an unarmed international intervention fostering local customs
2 n) f) k" x+ {% I% aand music to strengthen an indigenous-run peace process < and it worked!8 F# k# e5 X( J$ Y
. r1 Z1 Y% y: R) H6 U% C
According to Smith "the fact that we were unarmed was critical to the: a7 J1 ^# Y) e) `1 F
success of the peace process in Bougainville. It set the tone for the whole
) H3 K0 _5 w3 X) `0 ?% L$ w, x" Y Uprocess, and put responsibility for the safety of the Peacekeepers in the6 B0 g- U* M- ~, l6 F
hands of the militants and the people, rather than the other way around.
$ y$ F/ W2 Q8 |' Q* d! IAlso, because we were unarmed we couldn't scare anyone into doing anything,
. f1 Q" Q* H- Q* r( Lso we learned to communicate instead. That's where music came in."
