9 Y, v# z2 r; R9 e7 L" D& rAs a result, immigration and controversial laws around citizenship are coming up a bit more often on the doors, say candidates.
( R ^& D0 g8 LConservative candidate Tim Uppal said his party has an excellent record on welcoming newcomers.
% Q0 h7 n& j6 N" H* Y6 p9 k0 i0 _: N/ `! F* P
“Under this government, we have had the highest levels of sustained immigration in Canadian history,” he said.

/ j! _: V% I# m: NUppal also defends bill C-24, legislation that allows the government to strip citizenship from dual citizens convicted of terrorism or treason. He said when someone has been convicted and served their time of a charge as serious as terrorism it’s common sense to deport them.
7 Z% j8 }- x- b6 v; t( L+ q7 n4 d“If we can have their citizenship stripped, because they’re a dual citizen, than I would rather not have them in this country,” he said.

Liberal candidate Amarjeet Sohi said the Conservative bill is discriminatory, treating Canadians with dual citizenship as unequal.

“If you deport a terrorist to another country, where there may not be any rule of law, where they can create havoc in that country, how does that make the world a safe place?”

“People are really, really under fear and they want to see these changes,” he said.
