谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语

  u) B+ k( L* e0 K% w在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯- g3 ?% @1 y3 c& R3 y) X
之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。
+ m5 g1 v' v( Z) o若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!% s4 l' G) K7 W4 a

& v" g+ t$ _' O1 E4 m  c7 b5 P6 K(1) empty suit:7 R) Q& r/ n  k$ t7 }
指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。' X* W4 e, L1 s3 B4 h
(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。): W; O$ k- e3 j( K6 x) m9 R3 k1 c
例如:3 \" [$ Y' R) G! l3 ~
An empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.0 |2 c8 P, O# T: X# q1 _
(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。): c* ]2 s. r4 @+ K5 E
Mr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.' W4 e" D: i# O" U9 q
(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)
& [9 Q% @# J' W8 t虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:; ?- l5 ]+ y; l
The company is filled with a lot of empty suits.' N: g) Y" m" K, k4 m) Q
(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)

5 ?4 d: t( P( E7 E% ~  ?' p/ {指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)$ h  H& X0 ~9 z9 F
(通常用单数,当名词用)
1 K* L. V4 v1 }! z2 s例如:1 t. n7 a  |* r
Mr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.
: N$ x+ C/ S- Z' y( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)' e, H& v0 o: y' b, ~
Not being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.
5 O! ^8 W; y6 G; \+ w# N(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。)
# u( {: J% R2 [6 C8 U有时也可用复数:- s- I3 H% |2 A- c6 g8 a
Mr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.
# u9 |) G& R* z2 U' G" c3 d0 ~(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)
: E( f- ^4 N( R2 ]: wFair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses., m. e" S" q6 G; i% u" h3 B9 u& r+ {
(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)
& ~6 I- Q5 D) ]8 w$ f(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法)
  j/ O2 y2 G* @# F+ p- j(3) fishing expedition:/ d% B3 f5 e" h- O. a" o
为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)) Q+ {% X" C# s# O6 q
(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数), r) h0 i8 N/ x% I  d. X& Q
例如:
4 p* I8 W. u' ^& B: ]; v" cThe judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.& I2 x1 N" @7 m* l, K+ }7 u
(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)3 G$ H4 U! r: F8 S4 d) j
The police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case.+ P! M3 W% C: \3 b" C% ^
(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)+ Q" Z- h1 F  ]3 r( L# x3 H. Q
(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict)
. k$ i2 h- G6 E6 ?The reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.
4 b+ s& L& M  ?3 s# e( u5 ^(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)
' ~  V3 X5 z) e" [6 D2 m- h- w: _偶尔也有人用复数:. t4 S: w" h$ k+ Y7 y! p
Several fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office.
, n: _' q3 e" T4 Q! z4 L1 V(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)" X% n0 a% |" T4 D
(4) filthy rich:
7 @3 V) Y3 W# B- P- C5 F意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)4 N% c, `6 b6 n
(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)7 e$ P+ c2 c; h, A' p
多半当形容词用。例如:) l  Y& m! T# i0 @! a; P
With a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.
) u0 b  }& A. d# K: d* P6 l& x( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)9 ^7 x5 ?9 o3 \
Despite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.6 m, [; U4 |9 M, ^/ I6 U
(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)! q3 X' p3 @, f. I6 j/ Y
A filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.
& P: B  J/ \: h4 d6 j' q0 D(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)6 k7 E% F+ \* s( A& ?
Filthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.
2 R. E0 b; d( a" M5 r; U. J* ~(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。): {- @  \: Y; P, o
(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法)
$ x, S/ _9 R" K$ E# j+ n, I9 ~(5) fairy godmother:( G% r, T1 K# e' O; H: N! `
指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance)
/ J9 M  O2 z! ^& E; `(多半指有钱的女人)
; e$ _; N" {7 N7 i2 z( ?' K(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:
- M' j5 L- |6 i. d7 _1 \Mr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.
8 ~! [2 J( L, y5 ]1 e, b(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)
0 Y- P# q1 |2 w3 K* kAfter lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.1 V' F( i4 v' d" q6 s" ?
(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)
, v/ h* {6 r' Z6 h2 z有时也用复数:, y' h$ c$ M' c6 G) f
Only business women can act as fairy godmothers.
- }8 I1 E% K1 S6 A(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)( ]- L, M5 ^1 R' s# f% m
In Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered., h4 V$ V0 @) q
(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。)* N4 k$ a: b: N* ~2 N9 D* i4 o
  R* Q# m3 s' }; s4 E! N

6)eye opener:4 Z: L3 F* V) p! H! c
指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)( p  F& C2 f1 C6 C
(当名词用;通常只用单数)
; B6 a5 L6 L! k1 s例如:: g8 a2 M1 s. j
Your wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.2 Z, g) U$ X/ @0 ~, p7 K
(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)# P% `$ @6 a( r
Mr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.
* p7 m/ N* L( X/ s. m(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)
& N' ^6 h4 V% [& ?4 F0 mThe popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.
! x7 H" c( e. f, m/ C( f; a(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。), f. h+ w/ v# b" ?% h
Some American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people.6 Q) Z. j( X0 i% T
(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。)1 r' `0 I, g9 {% ^
(7) hot dog:
' U% M5 M7 e& l# }指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)
- e$ l) Q6 I- `. `例如:4 l9 }3 K. D7 x4 ]$ o( _9 ]
Some young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.
6 C, a5 e6 f1 j% D3 i(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)9 g6 d! s  _: @" E1 L2 b
(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)
6 O# `3 f; R2 bIn front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.: c) ?- T6 @) L' P
(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。). d- y" k+ L% K' z4 X  \0 i
(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)
  {4 U7 A% {5 _- n5 UDuring the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.( G$ Q9 O$ Q1 V  A7 c; K
(在空军表演时,一位飞行员做惊险的飞行动作。). L  P7 h4 K# @" N  @
也指真正的热狗食物:
, M2 S* J( _- b& W  b7 m& YThe hot dog is one of the favorite fast food in the U.S." I4 u" _9 ~& _6 T9 P
(在美国热狗是一种受欢迎的快餐。)
3 B. b0 [' \4 @. Q也可表达欣赏的心情:

(真棒!对我来说是好消息。)
2 N* ]9 P0 ~, F4 y1 }(8)eager beaver:0 ?* n& b$ L# G; G4 F' o: J
指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others)- x! v8 C/ f8 Z- {! Q* L
(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)
# i  T1 [* h& g  W: u(当名词用,可指男女)% t- j) e  G( P1 H: E( B
例如:6 P/ V5 b2 P$ C: w) p3 |/ N
John seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.
& F6 ^" _! g$ H4 [7 L( p3 p) u(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)
1 J3 R' P/ q2 A9 x, bBeing an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.; O7 ]# l* X5 R
(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)
" \6 ~- G! W4 \9 w+ G- u: \" rDoes Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?! w& D% x! T7 K
(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)
4 M& z' D5 ]1 l! G: h  F2 JYou may find some eager beavers in any organizations.
+ W( [9 i# A& _; B$ j" }7 W" o. P(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。)+ g/ a4 J1 _( t% g5 Z8 e7 q. w+ y' {$ d, |
(9)doubting Thomas:1 o7 @) N: D% W# ~0 \1 b' V
这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)" C  a3 Q6 g2 M& U, p9 @
(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活), V: V' k  o) l' w; ^2 x
(当名词用)4 ^; I( C" J2 i. |3 [' B
例如:$ V! U( l& V5 W
I am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.( z8 m- L* C) o# z  `
(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)
- p0 y/ d# w3 U5 k3 h/ s$ sThere must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.5 Q& W2 E5 t& J  D
(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。)7 B: s8 {/ z; e# }/ L% Y
也可用复数:; n, N3 L' V) y# o) o# q" ?" G
My friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.
9 f" O$ J0 r. A: ^' q$ @. N(我朋友对许多中国商人不信任。)! x! P1 W% ]! y9 b1 j
If there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.* n6 P0 S* @0 a. E0 X* m# A
(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。)
& J" V$ x. Z$ V  K/ R# e! V. @1 W(10)dragon lady:
; \' q! z& C% A$ f5 z! m指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)
* {/ B2 X+ G4 n) @例如:
: a1 c. J. b! e, S* `/ c3 _) GThe chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.
. c' K* L+ G0 {6 `6 K3 e# n. o2 A" Y(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)' A  \7 L4 O9 Q* Q$ D: \9 K
I am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady.
5 C4 c* h; ?! c$ ~(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)
  o! G6 W- _& a- EShould your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?

There may be many dragon ladies in our community.

注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
