谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语9 \, S$ L. x; o; I0 L/ j

2 u' @1 W* L8 A) |" [2 j6 `9 \) N: t. x: ]8 L# |
在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯6 [; e. v" m5 I1 G' T5 I2 L- f* t
之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。
7 f0 ~/ {& W! E1 D6 Z* G若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!

7 O) n! X- {& ](1) empty suit:
, r# v% b6 l6 @6 J! J! t  j7 M指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。
( X# Z( {4 U6 |0 g(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)5 m( E! O0 c$ j1 c# T; J9 d7 t
例如:/ }2 x" a- i7 o* \' g
An empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.
2 U9 J( J1 p& e7 D  Y0 q( a5 Z(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)
; p. `8 j" Y  T* J0 HMr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.
" `6 w( p: Q* L" J! Q4 Z(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)
5 j2 O* a! y: F( X- m% h# f( [虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:& t. i3 F% g2 U  V* o6 t( t6 c  j
The company is filled with a lot of empty suits.
5 l6 j/ s. Q/ {(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)
$ B( o/ u. g- m! k' X(2) fair-haired boy:
+ w$ b/ [% s) K/ ?$ U# Q7 [3 }指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)
8 Z# u% q# n2 [- P% D; @  R, k0 u(通常用单数,当名词用)
4 v5 }1 m1 ?3 N! c, o& p9 @例如:. X! M. U: Z  c  i5 t
Mr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.
2 s1 u" Z; A7 ?/ O: D" u4 ]: j6 M) v( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)
6 O) }3 w4 o1 y/ r) o: ?; C3 R) ]Not being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.0 |4 i% ]" R1 e! A
(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。)
0 {. ]0 z. \* R( h" A5 X有时也可用复数:; z/ C2 ~0 o8 J
Mr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.
; n5 \: P* @0 S" h(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)
5 ?* p2 E2 Q( z- l! i$ `9 [Fair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.3 ]  O8 n7 q" d
(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)# P# }, M. q8 C( Z7 d$ U! @
(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法); H  E7 Y- |$ p7 T
(3) fishing expedition:
: c! x* W/ w  W( g为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)7 V8 @9 o: R* V2 [
(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)( h' ?* D0 r. J. ^
例如:
, t. o4 y% H; E3 hThe judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.
5 \& u9 M6 `! {+ j# D& N(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)' _7 H+ D" x# `! Z
The police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case.1 D( }2 [/ }+ s% t7 Q
(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)" H/ ~0 m  |3 U% O& V& f
(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict)+ T  \2 O; o0 Y
The reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.- f- ^; \1 e6 \  e+ Z- S
(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。). v, ]* K" a. P2 s
偶尔也有人用复数:+ q$ r# k0 |8 Q1 _7 D$ D' }" O
Several fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office.
% v. F" _: p: R(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)
" O# x/ \+ a" `: U7 \(4) filthy rich:# \5 |9 i: J! O0 j( a4 k
意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)$ n9 i! F1 D; S
(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱): U" R- U6 d$ Q/ z
多半当形容词用。例如:
  {% w, I! ?3 a, EWith a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.9 G0 N+ V8 s2 v) V  x" G( j, h
( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)
: F9 E4 c* |! _! b, yDespite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.. j) A/ i2 n' q! U/ ^7 F
(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)0 p0 C4 t4 c  ?* a/ A
A filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.& o7 J& \7 V; e- S* U+ X% ]* a& N
(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)
- e, X) v; n7 h' s  t1 fFilthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.. M( ?9 B3 _9 l+ ^0 w6 d$ v- }
(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。)& R/ @/ m, [5 e
(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法)7 F5 U  M7 v  B5 a3 O
(5) fairy godmother:
4 p( }5 }1 C( B* P) X; c( l; Q& s指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance)
! E3 f# p1 ^+ x+ j(多半指有钱的女人)+ i; E* f3 p8 C& t. W
(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:
4 r2 e0 X! O( G; t4 _3 z% pMr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.3 E" N) R1 a( M: i7 I
(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)
. V( A1 Q/ A% c& _) j: E. @+ gAfter lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother./ c) p& U, ~5 h; F/ k+ J: B4 n
(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)
1 V" `$ P9 c' \有时也用复数:
& @5 f( V8 P0 n, I0 yOnly business women can act as fairy godmothers.( U3 A  |. B  R9 R9 ]: Z8 Y
(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)$ z- E7 G' y# @6 ~1 b1 T) X* f
In Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered.
: u; J5 e5 z4 W4 [(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。)

指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)
, s8 C/ e7 \  y+ N" d7 x9 a- l/ j' |(当名词用;通常只用单数)/ M: {7 H. V5 S; d7 _; F
例如:
; d9 \/ {, Y2 _# U/ }/ gYour wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.' N8 d" `' x4 @
(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)& j4 K! u: \' A- t( s7 t
Mr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.
: r& H  ?  }+ y+ A$ y+ h" I7 Y(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。); w. \  i. u% Y
The popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.% }2 w+ B9 b: t( Z8 P" [& [3 @
(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)
: l- @: F+ ]; ~4 \Some American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people.7 W) J4 O; b& t- q3 |* r) Y
(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。)# f( B/ O  V1 M4 N0 g4 R8 [" z& u
(7) hot dog:6 X8 u4 @1 z# Q& k' G& @2 P1 N
指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)
  V+ _& f& k- D  h8 Z例如:" v  E' p- H* J! z
Some young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.0 t9 z; s. U  d! Q- ~. O
(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。). ]1 S$ r& u: L8 q
(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)! _% v' ?" x9 s- _: B+ b3 a  w" |5 }
In front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.
9 R0 r! s: N) c( {(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)
9 F+ [0 ~$ f1 q5 b# p(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)4 {3 y5 r7 y1 c' c8 v6 g9 K( P  v
During the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.

指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others)& D1 O  \4 q! N) C
(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)5 U0 D+ p: w0 h: K' B0 r1 E
(当名词用,可指男女), L8 w8 `. Q7 P. n, K2 W1 m- {5 _
例如:
! x/ H; c& K2 [9 o+ nJohn seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.
% S( g- {5 l6 D* m(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)8 V8 s* \9 i5 }9 y/ @
Being an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.
8 S- U8 O( s; X& a(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)
; g! y% L  k# i) W! qDoes Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?! ~- O8 L& E$ v- a5 i8 t
(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)/ r. f( R. |, m2 m* }8 X
You may find some eager beavers in any organizations.- r9 k- _( {- X/ H. |
(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。)
: Q0 V! _* r/ C0 V. s) T(9)doubting Thomas:* O  g( l7 X  B5 A7 w
这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)
8 G* G) p5 u/ j8 Q4 I. m(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活)$ `( \1 a( T" {" {6 W
(当名词用)
- x5 [6 G  Q4 S! s! E例如:) C$ e' O) R- P. A' c& e' E
I am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.- a4 ^* \' @2 _* F* c6 d( R  z- k# {4 f
(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)( A) G3 Y4 H% R2 W/ Y# N8 h
There must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.
( v* h4 R5 H& |- o  |* `/ M(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。)# |- T% ^- Z' |3 I, x3 o( ^( P) O% S

My friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.

指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)& X! P) J4 `8 v1 S- A
例如:9 b; Z5 @7 v! q) K% n
The chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.
, c% m, C* W2 f) g$ ?$ x# [6 i. B; J(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)
2 I8 A, d0 t; h7 J0 E4 U5 I! ]$ RI am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady.4 |4 J; q; C- |0 e+ C/ T* T8 x
(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)
