I am Elena Nicoladis, a researcher at the University of Alberta. With graduate student Poliana Barbosa, I% t+ j+ |2 d9 }- p1 e( k `
am conducting a study titled, “Language, Self-Recognition and Attachment Development: Possible pathways”,, U% z" f6 ^, n9 m5 K3 X0 }
concerning babies between 6- and 18- months of age. The purpose of the study is to understand how language and8 N; k( p: o7 p" L4 X, U7 k
attachment are related. For example, we want to know if babies that are good at relating to people around them
8 P7 T, c, n7 M2 d2 N0 z7 G q1 fwill acquire language earlier and faster.1 E; P" ~, E5 e! y5 W
* u. {4 v }! ^# n6 w3 \7 P6 Y5 f
In order to find out, we will videotape you and your baby during a free play situation for approximately
5 ^( M% l) Z7 x7 {& U30 minutes, at 6, 9, and 12 months of age. We know that babies are unpredictable so if you would like us to stop
! o& X/ {! q/ y, I" ^- z9 ^9 v5 z! Evideotaping even after we have arrived, we will do so immediately. We can either reschedule for another day or
! l5 _) R5 Q0 X3 B& k* E" Fsimply skip this visit. Every visit, we will ask if we may contact you again for the next visit’s videotaping: you9 U+ M" k' K; b8 ?% n6 C4 h5 S5 f
may say no at any time. In the video we will look for cues your baby might use in order to learn words. If your% K0 G9 L. |6 U8 w9 J$ F( l+ S
baby starts speaking before 12 months, we will note down the words used.
+ s W7 S# U, ?6 V8 p9 @( Z i* t: L
At 6, 9 and 12 months, we will also ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire with infants’ common
* R) {6 d" x1 ^% V( ~) l* Q3 l! y; Xbehaviors. You will chose in a scale from 1 to 7 those behaviors that are more descriptive of your baby (7) and0 q# V! [3 e! |
those that a least descriptive (1). This should last about 15 minutes.$ E- h3 d9 g/ g4 i( }* J
- b9 Y, M3 y- O; u: B1 dStarting in the age of 9 months, we you ask you to take note of any word your baby might spontaneously
: P' P% i/ J$ ` v+ d/ X0 wproduce. And at 9, 12 and 18 months of age, we will ask you to mark from a list of words any words your baby$ x& A4 P6 V8 r2 S# m
knows. We will also give you index cards with infants’ common behaviors and ask you to sort them according to
5 b" ~& b w ?/ g( L* ~those behaviors that are more like your baby’s own behaviors. It should take around 30 minutes.7 N( ^5 Z5 T3 y) a9 k
4 H/ V3 ~7 r# P+ _ \6 Z( c: ^Finally, at 12 and 18 months we will measure your son/daughter language through a standard test. In this,6 c" A! h* p$ Z) X* _
the child will basically point to pictures and nominate objects.) e$ t" j. n& s
: P$ O& {" b K' P5 Y4 [8 wThe entire study will take maximum twelve months. You will receive a DVD with all the recordings done% _0 I' K1 x' Q
over the course of the study. In the future, we would like to visit you and your baby one more time, when he/she7 I! c4 E+ W; D. |3 E- I9 W
is 24-month old, when we will measure the child’s vocabulary and language development. This last session will
; w# C2 `2 o* F# Utake about 30 minutes. If we may contact you to see if you are willing to do this follow-up session, please indicate

As a default, all videos and computer files are only accessible to those involved in the research. The data: Y4 ~6 \9 j! D+ r# B' X# h
are stored in a room at the University, with access limited to lab personnel. If you are willing to allow us to show
$ `; @) W1 b6 [. Dvideo clips of you and your baby to scientific audiences, please indicate on the next page. No names will be used. ~2 i i# K( [$ b; o8 i$ q
in the storing or presenting of information, only codes. The data will be kept for a minimum of five years and
9 P6 t1 Z* B; l2 b3 ^+ [% A) H% ^destroyed when no longer in use. The anonymous coded results will be used for research articles, presentations,
! J4 e, n! k. U, d) @- W0 w0 v& A2 ~( Uand teaching. Research assistants will comply with the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of9 S) }* @ r+ q n5 _
Human Research. You are also able to end participation at any time up until we publish the results in scientific( A; ]0 ~* ?2 J: t {: x8 j) q
journals without any repercussions. It is worth to noticed that there is no direct benefits or risks to both the child
