Insurance required

Except as otherwise permitted under this Act, a person shall
4 T+ }9 B) q) U' G( Unot do any of the following:
) U# Z- N6 f$ w' ?, y, s(a) drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
* D) G S0 E! t5 q$ k' \( ~vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;+ |4 l M( R- Z5 f) f
(b) have a motor vehicle on a highway unless the motor
]2 y; X8 j8 b9 k/ ^. {vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
4 N; N( W7 |% }4 l/ ^(c) where a person is the registered owner of a motor vehicle,
% M, u9 k f F$ o* Q0 V- q2 y* apermit another person
/ a5 f* Y+ U l$ r+ R3 R(i) to drive the motor vehicle on a highway, or6 `' F8 H- X* _4 g: i" ]1 E
(ii) to have the motor vehicle on a highway,
0 [! Y. b: k7 Z Dunless the motor vehicle is an insured motor vehicle;
- E9 f, r$ i5 Q& a2 E$ c(d) give or lend a financial
/ S( M7 P! |9 h; ~3 D; A" Z* }2 gresponsibility card or a copy of it
# s3 Y2 a& R2 ?6 hto a person not entitled to have that financial& }7 A$ l K& p
responsibility card or copy.' b- ^) r9 p. c9 w4 D2 i+ k

If a person drives or has a motor vehicle on a highway
6 s: W1 d6 V; M& awithout the expressed or implied consent of the registered owner of
" u2 D/ p$ F- N& B$ ?the vehicle, that person is deemed for the purposes of subsection
% o; n) h; F4 U i5 \. R(1)(a) or (b) to drive or have on a highway a motor vehicle that is+ ^$ d. O# H- I( |0 Y
not an insured motor vehicle.

If the registration of a motor vehicle is suspended under this
/ k% D2 B9 t' n1 Q8 {% |; XAct, the motor vehicle is still registered for the purposes of this
- L# }- e& I! qsection.# V& ` }# T5 Y: }# v Q3 `" z6 X& k

6 d8 d8 V% F! \& u5 h6 ~& O# ]Subsection (1)(a) and (b) do not apply to a person to whom a
; x4 U8 k' ~% M0 V, [/ Ffinancial responsibility card has been issued pursuant to the
+ Q6 y( i0 c* ^1 W# E4 {: }Insurance Act8 X: r* j5 \& P) r( O
by an insurer who has issued an owner’s policy
0 o3 R3 X+ ~# P0 A& w1 w* Ioutside Alberta.: r) Q8 E/ Y, m; A0 H

+ S$ m- J) e# t. b6 DA person, other than a corporation, who contravenes subsection1 R/ S% n% n1 B
(1) or section 52(1)(h) or 167(8) is liable,5 E# a n+ l$ i* h- ?- o
(a) for the first contravention, to a fine of not less than $2500
" V# l3 M5 m" G I' Uand not more than $10 000 and in default of payment to' b- Q8 _1 [! _
imprisonment for a term of not less than 45 days and not
) n) c- {7 y; }more than 6 months
& q o# M, R8 x/ O$ mMinimum $2500, if you don't pay, you will go to jail for a minimum of 45 days. |
