You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,5 ]- @$ h1 J7 t' A1 w5 B, p

# R) O# x" G# s9 I$ _+ HI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.; G  x& F+ f! K: l+ i5 r
' e; o) @. U6 I* R
His name was Kyle.
1 w9 ?# }: {8 P( H2 [% U
% A2 \* c6 `! c9 Y/ g$ S# B/ AIt looked like he was carrying all of his
7 ~2 R( O* z' ]/ B# P6 Q' W2 {% Q/ t! r5 qBooks.  L/ ^% e* z$ q9 V$ ]- s- F/ R+ p. y

4 x: l# S6 @; X0 q- x" D7 L6 GI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?0 c3 F- I, A: c2 b' i' Y
) n" Z* C2 V' S5 g  V# J
He must really be a nerd."
* D& d5 P0 Y% V
! h- d* O* c0 K/ u4 W( eI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.; Q4 X$ l- y! z2 `4 }

$ ?1 O2 Y: m& G0 }0 `6 SAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.- b0 o: h% P. C0 j
# W& P8 q4 Q' Z4 A! c
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
$ v0 W3 j4 E8 X, [; x* h
/ F* C8 T0 H! R7 x9 f- F7 k7 eHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.- q! C% ?& ~; s# I7 ^
- b' U/ q7 ^+ S) Z$ Y
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
8 A* V% \5 a1 H7 ^+ M& S: r" l3 v3 }& P) M1 G+ g6 p; ]; T
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye." {7 U: U( o" q0 W: X5 p9 y
$ t# G2 x0 N5 G& w5 K
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.9 I  q  o0 q/ A% o" x$ p- ^

+ q2 v* G7 Q$ V& H. OThey really should get lives.
3 H' [/ E) A: h6 D7 O  ?$ x' w% m$ k2 G1 a+ L5 T
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"" L* R" I  F# Q, `. x9 `; N

0 r! f7 S* o4 c* j. IThere was a big smile on his face.6 ]( W4 W, M! s- @; |( J
+ T& p) a/ _2 S5 Y
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
- G9 m0 R" }+ f7 I1 N; p2 E) h
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.! q, `5 T) d0 b. f6 `$ m$ k' E

( Y" E& U( L6 H9 L7 S7 sAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
  H/ v4 h2 S9 ^/ g+ ~: A
4 `- l( W* I6 K% M: ZHe said he had gone to private school before now.) h( _# W( {- ?2 a

* ]  M$ J1 r: O( s$ M/ ^I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.' F+ _. u# A& I9 ^9 ^
, L; A& ]7 Q7 m; q5 M: M
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
$ k. w6 e& i) {4 {. b" U5 i% u4 u9 }! F5 \5 l- Q
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.+ `& X3 L( _. v2 d8 |" q
: ^" X( _5 n1 |
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.: Y* j4 O4 S, U2 N4 {& Y

1 k6 o1 P/ b5 D" \* I) S& l( VHe said yes.9 P0 C5 P/ ?7 b9 c- D# l2 N1 ~
/ F  O4 v" }( j0 ?! g( H8 E2 ?
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.0 K: F. h- {9 A) N7 x$ v6 v
! _, F0 h- A3 o/ {
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
/ k( F* o9 d6 @( E1 m3 Q1 T$ K
' P$ [' [6 d0 l+ g- aI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
' j4 J% ~- g  s- B  o$ A- `4 J
) q/ l$ {+ l. ^" He just laughed and handed me half the books.$ A1 T: K3 X/ g6 Y+ v$ Z9 t" E

3 `5 n2 @' r2 N$ s3 A1 wOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.0 v" \% j/ U9 o9 i
3 T! v! Y; }! A3 T. l# F8 G( L
When we were seniors, we began to think
! X* ~) W/ m6 W( L3 ?About college.
, D: [$ [! J9 c/ Y
* @. F( J: d  @6 c% V" ^Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I
7 a# L6 p6 L: q( E- t) RWas going to Duke./ r) X2 y! m! i5 A

$ s) r6 l7 d3 |! wI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.& P" d, U6 d: b, S* d" N  D
& K" X4 j5 w% o' Z3 s
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
* x* U  F8 }/ X9 r! J3 q" f# j' m' _. o9 {
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.
8 Q5 d4 I/ }: J( j* ?" w. J+ V* h( [5 G0 m
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.
- P  E/ a  Y  H( g* S: K6 |, A2 g) s+ g, b; B6 @
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.9 l0 C: [1 ?6 {% G- X" R+ _
, [2 ^  I# V7 r6 m" r
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
8 y0 C" x# F% A9 }' Z; k. C/ U
' N9 v8 k# r7 a9 a. NGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
% Q; `* \4 e( V8 s1 N1 {% w) E
* V& y* N2 Z) U  ]. P& ~* L1 M3 k; lHe looked great.
+ R/ c2 t; T# s9 R- T7 a7 K
( {& c4 \1 l1 G9 zHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
; o6 J8 M1 r" f- O. B2 ~9 P2 I( g- [9 v7 t5 `; B8 e
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses., L$ v& o( S1 A; w3 `
8 W5 b! L6 S1 D1 @8 ^
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
0 F, S! C, ^' S0 K. `. z& r0 D' N' L% u: x# o2 K
Boy, sometimes I was jealous.
* d9 Q! B2 Y: P3 }4 j& ^
9 f0 x  p5 B( K+ ?Today was one of those days.
) [- t; w; O1 J% l% p) l# f1 ?6 R; J
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.
0 ?. }$ g" W( Z, N! R
$ I% {3 ?# t* |6 |$ Y3 I4 J! z3 m4 jSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"7 w6 |3 S& e4 N* F9 J$ t
7 ]& v: ?& x5 ?& R6 K
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.$ X7 N- S7 o7 _
( v0 K0 h" g8 ~) J- _' a
"Thanks," he said.& V+ e: g" C: z

/ l: I. A7 {. WAs he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
6 q0 y4 Q7 k# A
+ {+ G5 M/ h# ?) Q"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.8 g2 [1 C) {2 T1 {  K
$ d& s7 T* @  l
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends.... G; v( \# q, G8 M6 u

; ~/ h* n: k9 L  P: L1 DI am here to tell all of you that being a7 p# h8 B6 c# f! r5 f8 F4 H/ Q
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
1 a$ I& s+ t4 |$ K. H/ t
# b. [" ?! I# N) d- EI am going to tell you a story."' F& ~* w5 t5 O4 N7 G- a) l
. `7 j7 [  F. }! n) y; j
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
6 U4 p. T2 B3 G+ l7 t6 ?- u$ ?8 X
* f6 E& c% n8 c/ W! {He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
& Q, n" g; V0 k  J( Z- Z) A' [
0 c, a; ^8 \& J) p' l, v4 e4 N( {He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
4 q8 R7 P. @  C% X6 `" c
/ K/ I+ O0 T. u# t2 }He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.* u. A, p* m2 r
3 W" _0 e" Y) ^
"Thankfully, I was saved.1 E" S$ I6 y7 i
2 b0 O# a+ u1 A5 m! J- L
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
) K4 p. o, h, H4 I" q1 Q/ Z
2 Y: X! ^$ s( J, [I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
8 r$ Z+ E. n. `+ t% K0 e( L6 h3 j* O8 J" \) d& J, L
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.& I) ^8 h/ j3 v) K3 w
* t$ y" I# ], P
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.5 \( S, W6 d: B
' D6 l* H; i% {; a/ E1 o; {2 ^
Never underestimate the power of your actions.
9 e, \; q! i2 I! A: G' |" C- J9 c. h' k( G
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.5 c) H9 g& R5 \9 F

4 C: W: j6 I2 [1 _  F! R1 GFor better or for worse.
8 o! K6 L3 Z" A, }+ k! |  G: q1 }9 M, j/ t: ^) y: }
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
" |) L2 _  Q0 m. \7 M' X6 I: Z9 `$ m8 v" J# T. ]
Look for God in others.) e- ?' Z, L% d- G
/ d/ l" ]# h- p: ^) |
You now have two choices, you can:0 {9 Q* g: n/ t4 }" v1 z- j, I2 H$ J7 U
- a9 Z, j$ q! k- J" H
1) Pass this on to your friends or1 u0 m4 I/ h9 v' a1 w

7 Q) Z- ~0 k3 W( [  M2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
6 e3 v* S$ i& {4 a0 E- q
$ N% ^: m9 Z# a+ D( eAs you can see, I took choice number 1.
$ e! c9 J4 j- j% r! x"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
8 J+ S4 P5 _9 n
* Z0 E- O2 O$ D( T& d8 U$ wThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.
: h3 X5 i% @8 ^+ s" ]' g/ W0 ?1 r+ ]
4 z  C( L0 M1 m4 v$ X: fTomorrow is mystery.
8 }/ R% v5 @+ v" X* K
, y! R# g& L- A0 E* n4 x- m4 uToday is a gift.
! v4 y: E$ o% R: @8 g
- b; G! E5 |. m, Q% [It's National Friendship Week. Show your friends how much you care. Send this to everyone you consider a FRIEND.

If it comes back to you, then you'll know you have a circle of friends.
