Speed and power, without compromise. That’s how I’d sum up my impression1 `# W/ b' ^/ ]# y" U- U
of the new Nikon D800. Established medium-format image quality is
$ ]) ~8 C2 y/ m( ]8 @now inside a phenomenal, incredibly responsive Nikon machine. At 36.3
3 A( I- v5 v+ ~% V0 Hmegapixels, the D800 produces unprecedented image quality and resolution
! B- P/ V2 ~/ \: R0 ]( E4 r) Nwithin a body that boasts revolutionary technological advances. The 3D color' c! T( p# K4 k
matrix metering III, wide dynamic range and the improved AF performance9 @6 [7 P9 s9 L2 S" o
in low light are just a few features that are glaring improvements. The D800. }- U5 }4 s8 z4 J) u' q
allows me to concentrate on the light, the composition and my subject
! E; ?% l6 e" e+ Uwithout having to think about much else. In years past, wedding photography, @# V& X; D( x/ n8 u; F! M& d
was traditionally captured with medium-format equipment for maximum& _- y1 F5 \# y+ m
image quality. When the 35mm format was adopted within the genre, it was' T& h( H4 R& h: g3 p2 o) y' t/ z
widely accepted that image quality was compromised in lieu of speed and' b' r" p D L9 T
convenience. Now, my wedding portraiture will have a depth it’s never shown
I* M; t9 p! g, Pbefore, and my style of shooting will be enhanced rather than compromised,6 F$ m2 U' K/ _3 e3 ^2 h- o' K) a
thanks to the D800.
0 n5 S" ~+ k3 ?1 M0 ]' ]& wWhen I’m shooting beauty and jewelry in the studio or fashion on location, ~2 Q9 Z1 z* ]. q& x
36.3 megapixels changes the industry standard: in image quality, dynamic! _2 H) D" K0 I* D v0 n
range, color rendering and the final print. The detail from the D800 produces
' d* d2 a* P7 r3 b/ a( athe look of a medium-format camera, but gives me the feel and response of a( p0 g7 ?- Q: U/ U# d5 b( W8 ~; G: ^
D-SLR. The improvements in rendering skin tone and specular highlights, as
$ R+ M0 Y* C. Q% |7 Mwell as fabric and hair detail are superior to anything that has come before.
: C6 k9 \1 ?- b# H9 u: _# P1 lAutofocus quickly tracks models in motion. Nikon’s 91K-pixel RGB sensor5 K' T4 \ S9 w8 K, J, H5 }2 h
has noticeable improvements in metering accuracy, while the larger LCD is; J) ^) E# W* j( p' r7 H* m" o& u
easier to read. The camera body feels solid and ergonomically simple, while
' c( [! K1 B/ v/ V' |" {9 `also feeling lighter and smaller than previous high-resolution Nikons. New
1 o# [+ N1 y2 J* h8 b1 Icameras always inspire me to test and explore, and all the useful features
( ` q1 A) ~* V( d% ]9 uin such a compact package will open huge creative possibilities for my highquality5 e& [0 x/ g* g& w
prints and video.
/ b* J/ E$ \2 K, r/ @# R( U m. STo me, cameras are more like paintbrushes than technology. The goal is
/ ]4 S) ^. q& L* x# R& Z. mnot megapixels or technique but the image, and while camera models
0 s: p' G/ }, z( }2 e4 [9 E! hare important, they are not the be-all or end-all. But after a lifetime using$ u3 }5 h5 e+ ?: Z
countless cameras, I have found a new best friend. It was not love at first
4 I! j( m( `* s$ c. H4 T' I- ?sight. The sharpness and detail were initially intimidating, exposing my flaws
' `. D3 a8 y' Ulike never before. Subtle camera movements showed and differences of6 y) @ L1 a n$ ~- r6 @& K; v, a
acuity between aperture choices on various lenses were apparent. But now I- r: K5 H% A6 Y' u/ r. H) T$ r
am enthralled with this technology. Why? Because the images almost feel as
' U1 l8 q$ z2 n3 u$ hthough they were made with a 4x5 view camera! Special features like timelapse
i8 H3 k4 T' t3 Nphotography and the improved HD video quality and flexibility also add8 e3 G, h! v! q( ?4 s
tremendously to the camera’s personality. After spending a month with the; f. I0 B2 G' L1 w$ ]' T
D800, I’ll never be the same again. Perhaps the best compliment I can express

2 t2 u6 K: ^2 EAs a modern architectural photographer I am always looking for a lightweight,
' \- z6 d1 W5 Y8 s* b5 F/ Xcompact and reliable camera system fulfilling the requirements of my personal

architectural photography. From my hands-on experience I found that they
, B2 I( } C% k2 o R3 i$ `# qperfectly match with the newly invented system and produce breathtakingly
( @2 `3 @& t7 Z& h$ c9 }clean, clear and sharp files. This camera gives me the photographic flexibility! f: Y0 B5 `9 J% S7 Z- x
to work at unusual shooting locations and capture images in an exceptional
6 O# H/ J( l8 orange of light. It definitely takes my photographic versatility and image quality
