Timing Belt in ALL Japan cars

I was told that the timing belt is in any of Japan cars. But it is timing chain in American (US) cars. This means timing belt need to be checked and replaced, while timing chain is not.

Is this true?
Also, how much and how often to replace the timing belt?
Is it dangeous if the timing belt break when driving?

以前多数日本车是正时皮带，05年以后越来越多的用正时链。绝大多数美国车用正时链，少数用皮带，新车基本都是链。
皮带断裂或者打齿的话，引擎会停机卡死。情况轻微的话，需要大修引擎机头，严重的话引擎报废。失去动力后慢慢靠边停下就好，一般来说不会导致车辆失控。
