Position Profile Heavy Duty Mechanics inspect, service, and maintain diesel locomotives in accordance with federal and company regulations.

) U+ J. ~) {( D# NThey are also responsible for other important tasks, including:

. e6 i. j1 v: w! g9 eDiagnosing diesel engine malfunctions and making indicated repairs
( i% ^6 Q. s& G  b. q3 v% ^- k$ MOperating machinery in a safe and effective manner
Providing daily locomotive maintenance that includes changing oil or repairing, replacing, cleaning and adjusting parts
Assembling and starting engines
* i3 l5 ^1 U. T  ?' BDiagnosing locomotive component malfunctions
' }$ `% ~+ f& j1 y, {4 `Preparing inspection, work and maintenance reports

Good eye-hand coordination
- f$ g* f& F% E" s, V3 P  hFrequently lifting weights up to 50 pounds
& `) `6 D$ n, K, K5 h6 o% `Occasionally lifting weights up to 100 pounds
Physical work, sometimes outdoors in extreme weather conditions
Regular exposure to dust, pollen, fumes, noise and vibrations

( Z8 f: S2 v1 Y7 F0 pBasic technical knowledge of diesel
Welding skills
Using measuring devices and understanding visual displays
) T+ t( b, A$ Y; LMay need current, valid drivers license, CDL, and locomotive engineer certification
Visual acuity and hearing threshold tests are required for this position. Written pre-employment tests to become a Machinist Apprentice are required for this position. Completion of 3-year apprenticeship is required to become a Journeyman Machinist. This position is subject to night, weekend and holiday work hours when needed.

This is not a Red Seal apprenticeship.
