Position Profile Heavy Duty Mechanics inspect, service, and maintain diesel locomotives in accordance with federal and company regulations.

They are also responsible for other important tasks, including:

Diagnosing diesel engine malfunctions and making indicated repairs
Operating machinery in a safe and effective manner
: m1 N9 G6 c5 gProviding daily locomotive maintenance that includes changing oil or repairing, replacing, cleaning and adjusting parts
Assembling and starting engines
* Z- v- M3 U" U( iDiagnosing locomotive component malfunctions
Preparing inspection, work and maintenance reports
Performing other functions as assigned


Good eye-hand coordination
. M" i/ E5 q/ a/ `5 |' DFrequently lifting weights up to 50 pounds
Occasionally lifting weights up to 100 pounds
6 q  S4 ]& D- O, O! ?/ Y7 GPhysical work, sometimes outdoors in extreme weather conditions

Welding skills
Using measuring devices and understanding visual displays
May need current, valid drivers license, CDL, and locomotive engineer certification
. i: Y( }3 l% ]/ O' v9 V$ ^Visual acuity and hearing threshold tests are required for this position. Written pre-employment tests to become a Machinist Apprentice are required for this position. Completion of 3-year apprenticeship is required to become a Journeyman Machinist. This position is subject to night, weekend and holiday work hours when needed.
