an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
) s9 K( {6 x7 jinnovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops
4 ~! E% Q H) ?. T8 c) r6 m f' LCanada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look
z: D: v9 Y3 v3 o! Ucarefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be
/ o+ @; \; z7 N$ Pguided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
% v3 N6 x+ v* |) S& \. |0 g e' w: Tinvestment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing
$ m# r* z0 h- m D0 J$ rmarket forces to prevail. 7 ~( p# Q3 D6 ]( K: S
4 |) F2 Y) o0 W, L7 MThe Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
5 O6 [5 L" o4 w$ m9 S7 uchosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large
7 j' K: {- N+ H& i& K- M8 \number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the
% U2 N( H8 {3 sgovernment will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in6 X0 \, _- j! X( u
line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages
: H( J* E- u; I5 U3 Y& A3 Icompetition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that
- U- Z( {9 s U5 d" ^any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.5 b2 Y' `% w1 _: P
