Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are8 {/ W4 e4 Y3 E2 @
an increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving" Z/ G) }' U4 H0 i
innovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops
5 ~* t" r$ T4 ]8 B9 I) j9 u ACanada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look3 Y n2 P! J7 y3 u/ K# I: W
carefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be, N/ f% K* {0 e' f8 l0 q. m
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and5 X( I4 ^( W/ ^6 @% G; D
investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has( u( y4 F {; K( x3 v
chosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large8 P' d) e' E, X5 S! }/ q' `
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

When the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the, D9 }3 f* [5 v
government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in
0 X% ?# P; N. k2 e2 |6 bline with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages
; b, i; o( u. |$ t3 P5 Icompetition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that
$ i% }5 m, F, L) a* _any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.
