on the issues that matter. Prime Minister Harper and I have been clear$ y$ ?3 @# r: Q) a" m9 f
that we cannot support imposing a UBB business model on wholesale Internet+ {' f: U7 ~4 }" X" `
service providers.; C7 A3 A9 o) ~

Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are
2 q0 K+ c G! J" y7 Nan increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
; r W6 \6 J- `; [8 F$ t. Rinnovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops
1 z; p a" L5 S8 g5 xCanada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look
- D! N& q( L; l6 F# H# Scarefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be
: g0 b) N) k, \2 H1 X6 Nguided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and# Z& c; R% v! U" m) E' n% Q' V
investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing0 r6 Z9 k) ]: V( D& ]5 X
market forces to prevail. 3 F! G4 f+ P0 Q6 K% s, Q1 B
% @+ }; l4 _( N) ?7 V
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
: \9 U% _; ?6 z schosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large9 X3 H7 X& ]6 l
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

@. B, X, x. t% }. iWhen the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the
% V/ s, X0 g( wgovernment will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in
5 q, Q. P7 {+ \ k5 ]: R5 i& `line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages
- f, o6 w5 G0 ecompetition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that* i3 z, S& r( Z$ z' ^3 D) v
any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.2 H, n8 _6 m) y6 C" q; q
