Seven years ago I was asked by a friend if I was "religious and if I believed in God?" As a (formerly) practicing agnostic I quickly answered:"no." However, I defended myself by explaining that I lived my life according to universal principals of "right and wrong" (as I understood them). Because I believed that our deeds create a lasting effect on the world, I felt confident in my everlasting future. In other words, I wasn't worried about there being a heaven or not. I told my friend that when I die, I am banking on knowing that my impact on the world will be ever lasting. My "heaven" will ultimately be the creation of the the sum total of all my actions.

I will never forget my friend's response: he looked at me with glassy eyes, and told me how deeply spiritual I was. I didn't see it. It took five more years to see what he meant. Such was the inspiration of the following poem I wrote.. P3 ] ]) o$ R9 r3 U

Heaven
, l( r: @8 T( } The pebble is worn smooth
! a& z4 Y# D6 ~+ j' W" L/ V) R1 l Made small over time Z- d: C' u1 y: N( R U
A product of a cataclysmic force of nature, n- a2 U' Y p3 N+ X
A fragment of mountainous sheets of rock
0 Y6 v* p8 C Z+ I0 j/ } An accidental offspring of a boulder ! ~! D: }* @1 v6 b! W
But just a very small stone.
: R5 R( `0 @* K' M* z* Z" J6 f0 y 4 h/ l5 K$ w$ k" h" Y; w
The pebble's place in our world
) s3 p) o6 f b) w. [6 J# N% k Is neither understood nor appreciated
. Z% X( [! N# w But when thrown into a glassy calm pond 5 q, Z% k! [5 a; d
Its insignificance is transformed
7 V: g% R, H% B% Z' w9 p Its meaning and purpose is unleashed.
: [ x$ s6 P" p' b* R 5 T+ K" Y% Z0 l2 r3 [
The instant the pebble kisses the pond
) r: N& Z& k$ }! Z8 T2 V1 }/ Y Its signature of concentric ripples
' G# u1 T/ @6 p9 l& ?8 n! W. p Spiral outwards
+ g' c' k7 I) g Moving far beyond itself.+ ]2 b- X" U9 B; ` x7 l4 P; i) e. M
Gently affecting everything in its wake
* q- A( G @: O- K; ~$ W6 Y Forever altering the smooth placid surface.
* ~4 |& Z5 }( }* d# g) c" O " C j$ \; Q0 N) W0 j
The pebble creates its worth and meaning ' e3 q% {1 r; L" E
By unleashing its unimagined power?
% A6 A1 M1 n& O, H' g Into a dueling force of action and reaction) ~8 `! k7 O& `: S O6 p5 N9 |: S; |3 f
Creating karmic energy
7 P6 p4 t) U8 ]: ^ Producing lasting and fluid impressions.9 v; H% n- h/ g5 a' G
- _ D3 _ g; ]6 G5 e8 M, l
Aren't we all pebbles?* k% S% {; J- z- ~. a: \- [
Feeling small and insignificant9 P3 r: ]$ n% m2 r
But ultimately recognizing % R0 B4 L8 Y3 B% I
That who we are meant to be2 d# b+ K ~" Y' E3 U7 n
Can never be measured in isolation
& n$ l# ~1 ?) g+ E7 B* D: N3 H0 ?3 ^ on a path into ourselves.
9 N T8 h G4 f+ E8 T % E- X) ]+ j: b! H0 d
It is true then:+ C8 r9 S' z4 P1 C3 l8 `
Our everlasting future
1 n7 ^0 B3 k$ P8 e2 P1 k( q# W! N Is created by the indiscriminate tossing of pebbles; l! @% ]/ n# O
Into the pond of life+ r* U- M' ]8 f- R& X
Creating ripples
2 ~1 v5 K: Z' k: U that leave unique mark on our world
9 C [8 O8 M/ f6 d9 Q Not because of thoughts 3 t; |9 a# z! K) Y. S1 A
not because of well meaning plans2 l2 p7 p1 F" h4 ^: N
But because of actions. X. C$ q& R# I( a' M
+ l0 G! e) c& Z$ x7 |" W( X; ? Our life's prayers our answered* Z; N: r8 o8 L5 h
Because even the smallest pebble ; ^0 W/ s) H* g- c, Y
No matter how seemingly insignificant
2 {8 l; T* z" c& n9 P A2 R; a Changes the course of the lives+ n' B; Q- E; X# g) [
Of those we touch.? % z7 X5 @- p) W# U0 D
. E4 j- k% F7 T1 \
And when the icy winds of death& Y" R& b8 F$ F, A. R9 \) w
beckon our lasting attention. I: G0 d4 o j+ I
We will gently leave this life 0 E0 [$ D L& y9 g. q# H6 c
With the knowledge that 3 \4 `: L! S. ~5 E! u5 Q, v" ]
because of that one pebble ) y ^' W4 w# g& F& |0 B' ^7 j. Z, I
The world will never be the same.* W, T7 M' m) ]- ]4 A
}6 B, x6 ^; Z8 Z6 Q
And then we have heaven …
