6 [9 O1 e8 a: \3 o. M The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 5 H2 h2 T, M5 f$ v) u
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
, [: \0 Z' @9 ~) d! G! rin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
: _1 {+ g+ \& d! Lexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
; a' Q/ c/ m3 |7 D0 btheir church, it was very run down and needed 2 ^9 [4 Q# O- L
much work. They set a goal to have everything
2 M# K2 _" n( I$ Y9 \" c4 Z6 c( _done in time to have their first service
% D2 D; b8 u( G9 B$ F! P0 {on Christmas Eve. 8 r) }6 l( ]3 I" \
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,1 W- c$ N7 H& m8 y
painting, etc, and on December 18 9 Q; l3 E! l: ?
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. b9 c+ Y; @5 P$ g9 u! E6 |: H
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
' L6 A7 A: U/ M1 `1 L: {rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. 3 J" u3 ^. U. k* i9 ?
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.; X# i$ ~8 q* W6 Q. u+ P; P. R
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
6 r& k6 Y6 H, C+ Q: f/ Jleaked, causing a large area of plaster about
" E( |8 X* }" W t5 s7 M% G& d3 i20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
* B `9 X) v' y+ X8 V8 W+ eof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, - M8 `1 |2 U: e/ H
beginning about head high. + o7 C/ l/ J' s1 @ _4 g0 ?
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
) d9 M1 v3 p- H- N5 Q, x2 Aand not knowing what else to do but postpone
! E% ]6 _& N- v( r+ D; ^7 D( Ithe Christmas Eve service, headed home.
9 o7 C" J+ Z E! U* ]+ p. ^2 jOn the way he noticed that a local business was
# v- z1 m0 I4 O; D- @; [3 Phaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he 1 j) \' ~& \/ n$ f7 K
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
, C$ h/ e5 H' a1 f* e' |' W- bhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
" s( k1 C" Y% E$ r! Xwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross U" J) M1 [0 y7 I7 I
embroidered right in the center. It was just
. M3 n- ^, e- `" e: ?* T5 q( x" y
0 N& Y# J1 t0 u7 {% B# A. k, A _# F7 b/ N: y
6 x+ `3 j+ f: i0 g: K0 _( R$ p/ E- c) ~+ s5 D: [ ]: ?3 G% L, j
3 L9 Z- T0 a1 T: @, _: a+ l
6 x/ A0 [! [+ ^; x- s$ `the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
+ W+ i8 F3 d' i7 z+ T2 y' mB y this time it had started to snow. An older
6 L& Z7 [! S9 o8 \woman running from the opposite direction was - X7 j0 O$ ~+ q! D( k2 y
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ! b3 K G$ M3 N1 X
invited her to wait in the warm church for - k, o6 d1 G9 w6 \5 z C
the next bus 45 minutes later.
% e. }4 g9 Z/ I) b) \) C, X: z$ A
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
2 q* K% c8 _2 }" J) ]; Vwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put , C8 x8 w5 H+ S' w/ c0 |4 \
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
* X" N" w0 Y) n3 ^0 ]# ]could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. 7 J% l; c+ i" @! T- y2 R9 S
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center+ X: o/ o L: `1 I! ]/ v
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
* H( x: }! R) s4 J, vshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
0 A" @- v6 p+ }: \; N, c, [The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
& s4 l# Y( Z0 hthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into. v- M8 J) S/ }# j) K# C" P
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had " V H! A* t& G+ ^. ]. Y( m& x
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
! N! J6 n# Y) y; j1 Z" z& a, mT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor Z* d& C0 }# M5 ?% \+ @
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
) g0 Y( H, q5 S% C5 H5 Ywoman explained that before the war she and 2 E! A6 ?+ M8 v) U
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
0 m( v* r9 ]/ w7 y
) x1 Y; q3 a" o1 nWhen the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. 5 o- F' U' q7 @! B3 H
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. 5 b# M( t9 d& q
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
. f" H9 p' N5 \/ rhusband or her home again. 9 N! U/ O0 y Z3 V7 r% y
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
1 @$ U9 d4 }# }- v- [( U& p0 dbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.) w3 ^: r: C# ]6 z
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That) v5 o4 r% _' M4 V. _* l6 P/ S" { u
was the least he could do. She lived on the other$ R I# K; w l0 F
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
) D2 o; T; a' o( E0 N- B# C4 J: J+ zfor the day for a housecleaning job.+ i9 k0 k- B" a8 q7 }3 Q
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
/ C4 S; F9 L4 Y! X: EEve. The church was almost full. The music and the
. u: Z+ b* I! p5 Y5 _ D; c5 Hspirit were great. At the end of the service, the 9 a$ k. t b- R' _
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 9 k% S5 M% p5 R5 q! l) C
and many said that they would return..
7 [% E* P2 D6 L, x" NOne older man, whom the pastor recognized A! _! \ J8 E6 Q# U
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
: Q/ Q Y7 l, y2 [9 hpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
. @% V0 z2 K0 lwasn't leaving. + Z! L L+ ]3 Y+ X, h+ o
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
4 A( d) z7 X, u9 L0 Uthe front wall because it was identical to one + o: H$ }! [: V v3 g) ^( u8 s
that his wife had made years ago when , Q5 u" `4 l" a( Y+ ]3 H& F
they lived in Austria before the war and how 4 M# r' A4 c& A2 e3 n
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? % H+ [5 o4 _+ p( G1 F, ^. m
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
: n( L# Q& Z* \6 g) \forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 4 ?# |. f3 Y+ U+ e# H0 J4 u
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
2 R3 p3 o) {: h( q4 zput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
3 J7 W7 ^5 D) _0 D6 tagain all the 35 years between. z' O7 \8 P0 ]1 ^# [0 r
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to 3 A/ b* E/ m5 ?& d) k
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 8 `7 E+ j( E/ V7 \9 K5 h7 Q
Island and to the same house where the pastor # A( N* `* _( ?' ?" O; J
had taken the woman three days earlier. 7 ~0 x2 k( A W9 Q# @* h. A
He helped the man climb the three flights of
7 e+ w7 m* q2 s P! D# n- astairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
' d; R; T/ i) D. mthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
