SCOPE OF THE CONSTRUCTION ELECTRICIAN OCCUPATION

systems, which provides light, heat, communications, and power to a variety of new and existing$ ]! @- N) T# T8 i/ X0 r0 Q& a" K
residential, commercial, and industrial structures.
q. {/ p0 n" y/ u' ]! |Construction electricians read and interpret electrical, mechanical, and architectural drawings2 Q0 K: m( A5 j& A
and electrical code specifications to determine wiring layout. They cut, thread, bend, assemble, and- |$ c: X1 w& G5 S/ f O6 k& P
install conduits and other types of electrical conductor enclosures and fittings. They pull wire and cable/ d3 s; `1 X- ^# l! M# W% B
through conduits, position, maintain and install distribution and control equipment such as switches,

Construction electricians work in the full range of environmental conditions: from outside in
! \7 C6 H2 v; q6 z1 X3 Xall weathers; inside in dusty industrial plants and mills; to state-of-the-art clean-rooms in hospitals and
7 Z6 ~3 n% g: n7 w Smanufacturing plants. The work often requires considerable standing, bending, crawling, lifting,# F. y2 }0 w5 k* c0 M0 Y$ Z
climbing, pulling, and reaching and may be conducted in cramped, confined spaces or on ladders and/ `5 V' n1 K/ B) I- R
scaffolding at great heights. Hazards include electric shocks, burns, and falling objects.
2 F5 v2 W' D* p( M; j, e2 j, tConstruction electricians are required to have good mechanical ability, a thorough
0 |- X, p/ d7 `1 N# _knowledge of the principles of electricity, circuitry, and power distribution systems, and familiarity with
5 b3 W2 D: Y( G0 lthe materials and techniques of construction. All construction electricians are required to be competent in

" g8 D$ L9 Q: r5 U9 UAll electrical wiring and installations must conform to the CSA Canadian Electrical Code.

For safety, permits and other regulations they follow local electrical, building and safety codes.

Construction electricians interact and work co-operatively with the full spectrum of
+ k K* }: a" Y; jconstruction tradespeople, such as carpenters, lathers, cabinetmakers, plumbers, and heating, ventilation* L% }4 T7 W) S6 k
and air-conditioning technicians. They are required to constantly adjust their schedule and work to5 [% \( H( L( q, X
accommodate the schedule of these other trades since most trades rely on some sort of electrical5 L; h- ?* ?, P$ C+ b* U. f# [" ?
connections at specific points in the construction cycle.
& F: E1 A$ D: E7 G! n! j# cWith advances in technology the work of the construction electrician is changing. Today’s
5 U) C9 K, g. mwired environment requires construction electricians to be able to install a variety of wiring such as data,% N9 Q0 X( Y! i
audio, video, signalling, and communication cabling. Electrical control systems are also becoming more
$ U7 p% V, q" S# Z7 Mcomplex, often solid-state or computer-controlled, which requires the construction electrician to have a
; q3 i# c( P3 Lgreater knowledge of electronic systems.
