( Y$ t8 m3 ~* F# j  G* }# @- yA high speed chase that wove through three counties came to a calm end in Boca Raton early this afternoon when the passenger, a robbery suspect, got out of his car, took a seat in a patio chair in the backyard of a private house and lay on the ground as officers approached to arrest him.

" F* n$ f+ Y: l5 yOfficials said a motorcycle accident in Pompano Beach that killed one man and left a woman critically injured was unrelated. That accident took place minutes earlier, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The chase apparently started with reports of robberies in Miami and Miami Beach, said Det. Juan Sanchez, spokesman for the Miami Beach Police Department. Police recognized a white minivan from a "be-on-the-lookout" alert at Northwest 14 Street and North Miami Avenue and tried to pull it over, sparking the pursuit.

The minivan made its way onto Interstate 95, where television cameras picked up the chase and began breathless broadcasts during their noon newscasts. The chase started before 12:30 p.m.

6 i/ b' {7 B; `5 j, n/ S* HWithin minutes, the vehicle was entering Florida's Turnpike at the Golden Glades Interchange and sped north into Broward County with Miami-Dade Police cruisers in pursuit.

* s6 v) c3 v0 }" fReaching speeds that approached 100 mph, the minivan weaved in and out of traffic lanes, sometimes resorting to the road shoulder and emergency lanes to avoid other vehicles.

The chase passed the site of a motorcycle crash that took place minutes earlier near the Pompano Beach Service Plaza, according to FHP spokesman Lt. Roger Reyes. The motorcycle rider, Jack Hardy, 70, apparently made an improper lane change and struck another car, Reyes said. Hardy and his wife, Penny, 54, were thrown from the motorcycle. Hardy later died at North Broward Medical Center, and his wife is at the hospital in critical condition, Reyes said.

) i0 P7 E- ]1 f& M& t' ?+ NMeanwhile, the white minivan got off the Turnpike at Atlantic Boulevard in Pompano Beach, then headed east and stopped briefly at the Powerline Road intersection.

A police officer in a patrol car behind the minivan started to get out, but the minivan took off, jumping a median and going north on Powerline.

The chase continued through several side streets before the minivan got back onto northbound I-95.

) e9 J' m8 K2 _. s  Z. hThe minivan got off the Interstate at Palmetto Park Road and made its way to the front of a private house at the end of a cul-de-sac on the 500 block of Southwest 1st Street, where the passenger got out, went into the backyard and took a seat and waited for officers.

Deputy Dean Mirra made the arrest, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.
