Edmonton police are investigating two killings from early Sunday morning, the city's 20th and 21st homicides of the year.

In the first incident, a 30-year-old man is dead in what police are calling a "gang motivated" shooting near Whitemud Drive, the Edmonton Police Service said in a press release.

& {# J5 _8 k; \) v+ \At approximately 2:20 a.m. MT, the EPS responded to a call of shots fired at a silver Infiniti near a Whitemud Drive overpass at 170th Street.

The driver of the car was found dead at the scene.

One male passenger fled from the vehicle before police arrived, and reports indicate a small white car was seen fleeing the scene after the shots were fired.

) n3 T1 L3 P1 y7 iMeanwhile, one male is dead and another is in police custody after an altercation between two groups in an alley early Sunday morning, according to an EPS press release.

" w3 H' A+ ?; WAt approximately 2:45 a.m. MT, officers spotted a vehicle being driven the wrong way on Gateway Boulevard near Whyte Avenue.! C. A3 B* p o7 ?8 O" a, i

Upon stopping the car, the officers learned that one of the passengers, a 24-year-old male, was seriously injured.. Q/ e. a- P; I* X& J

He was taken to hospital, where he died of his injuries.

4 s4 W- Z) E4 I% W" i5 QA police investigation revealed that the three male occupants of the vehicle had been involved in a physical altercation with two other males and a female near an alley south of Whyte Avenue, between Gateway Boulevard and Calgary Trail, which resulted in one male being stabbed.. 8 _( _9 u/ w' \2 f" g) C% o* RThe three suspects were located by police immediately following the vehicle stop. A 32-year-old male is in custody and charges are pending.2 B: O, P: |6 B! X

Police said the individuals are not known to each other and the incident does not appear to be gang- or drug-related.
