May 9 2008 - Statistics Canada reports that the unemployment rate rose to 6.1% in April even though employment increased by an estimated 19,000 over the month as more people entered the job market. Calculated in the U.S. manner, the participation rate reached 64.5% in April. " }0 g6 X/ B0 U5 C* F

Only Manitoba registered significant jobs growth during the month. Overall, the decline in manufacturing jobs continues as a major trend with 112,000 factory jobs lost since April 2007. 0 _9 w( V0 y3 j2 \ W2 ?& F) B
Seasonally adjusted, unemployment rates vary from 13.2% (Newfoundland and Labrador) to 3.3% (Alberta). 9 H' @3 Z- }# W* Y
