The VERTO Project

bring 12 (per intake) at-risk youth together into a unique 20 week group-based2 x4 |4 j. V4 ]
employability skills program entitled “The VERTO Project”; 16 weeks of day8 K1 T9 l1 r* h: q7 u
program and 4 weeks of employment exposure. YOUCAN is an acronym that
1 o! S- E' }5 d" {- ^+ fstands for Youth Organizing to Understand Conflict and Advocate Non-Violence.
8 h' N% M* O1 Y% V) z% fYOUCAN has served youth in the Edmonton area for almost six years and our
6 b7 R# I% B& G% `: Nmission is to equip youth to engage and inspire others to peacefully resolve. v: H$ A/ }2 j) p0 g+ n
conflicts and develop healthy relationships in their communities. The goal of the! q/ u' N1 S3 U0 q+ q# }5 o( {
VERTO Program is to assist participants in obtaining and maintaining the skills
' h' ~1 o- Q1 Y0 dnecessary to bring success into their lives. The program is designed to serve
# E0 |7 ~/ M" M* K$ oyouth who have been involved in the justice system. The program will expose/ ? h% r; `5 u ?8 u: [( v
participants to a wide range of components focusing on: employment2 W) s2 ~) B$ l4 c
development, personal wellness, technology learning, conflict resolution and
0 L k3 _( O& |% Y c( fexposure courses. Additionally, we will incorporate topics around health and
" ?' _, s) X) q' L9 lwellness, volunteerism and leadership courses. The youth will be provided with a6 V8 s! l P8 y7 E
6-month employment follow-up once the program is completed.. B6 s( d$ r. s& O- W; } a1 B" @. X4 s
The project will run from 9:30-4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Central1 w) Y' }8 ~ u, U
YOUCAN office, located at 8718-112 Avenue in Edmonton, Alberta.# N. C) F; ]. F( E' } N( n
The following position is a one-year contract with the possibility of: Y% D6 {: \5 i* F" X

• Responsible for building relationships with employers within the
- J! s6 M3 b9 U, z/ F+ V4 X, K9 Lcommunity to partner with YOUCAN to ensure there are employers that are: @# ` g; s( _2 ^1 a& U' H' D( r
willing to expose youth to the current employment opportunities6 E& @/ m4 @7 W/ _3 \3 _
• Ensure the youth action plans are reflecting the employment goals as
3 P0 h& a: d! v, ~/ {/ w0 qbeing realistic to each youth participant
/ `* F3 _* N: \8 f6 ^. c• Work with the youth to find the appropriate training needed to equip the
U3 e" q' U, W, P. o, l3 lyouth with the necessary skills needed to find the employment suitable to
3 O) u) A* |* a9 |- G- p8 r5 |each participant, a8 e- p4 ~) a/ k) R* \& [) A
• Assist youth with employment development including the development of$ z B% \0 d S( |
cover letters and resumes etc.
& n: x) @4 G7 l& y• Coordinate the employment exposure component and on site work" `: X9 f: [. L
experience of the project, and monitor the progress of each youth at the: U% D+ W# t- L/ y
placements
H% O0 M5 l1 S1 S6 D0 D• Conduct the 6 month follow up process for each of the youth, evaluating* M- q5 Z: t. R$ x) e4 @4 T8 E. r! U3 o
the process, and supporting the youth where needed
, T; x k/ N, k; K7 A4 M• Work closely with staff of the Verto Project to ensure the holistic approach
1 j- N8 n8 j$ y( ois being fulfilled for each youth. u; B, e4 K$ W& }
• Administrative tasks, such as phone, fax, filing, copying, etc. that are! x3 G# R; I8 K3 g4 J, ^/ ]3 C) B1 f
related to YOUCAN’s Verto Project1 f5 K: ^# j8 z0 i* ?) _
• Other tasks as they arise within the position$ R8 n6 Q: y! `- q
Experience Required: Employment Developer8 o+ U/ v' K6 E4 D ^% K
 Post-secondary education or 3 years related experience accepted* d/ ^ [$ \* R& m3 R0 m
 A minimum of three years relevant experience is required.
