( m' u9 d0 s# e) FGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 4 |% g1 J+ d; ~& q" f6 d! Z

Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
, ^0 i' D7 h5 B$ v" t3 Unews to report from that meeting.1 j: n7 V/ v. q7 p
: v/ c; |: w" qFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 5 c7 f( M4 R- \4 A" D' k- I( `
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
8 l0 m1 z3 I9 ~8 ~8 I0 N, P2 Odifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
( n9 }* d" u' y$ S$ Lstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base 1 M+ a9 v% w5 e/ K# O, G* [
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
) a, u% i) o7 r' m% j BAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase ; M. P3 R, G) F, e, k
the differential for international graduate students.
u9 q }) ]/ g& L1 l+ S; _+ B3 a6 x D: w
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an 1 `5 ^5 J) O; n
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to # T- V1 [6 q/ X2 @+ `
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 3 |0 n4 @8 c: [2 {) b
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At $ Y. n6 g3 r7 w1 R, R- F
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in - q7 v3 @9 N: B0 a' w
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected 5 y* H% s5 t/ J* o- B
increases once they are here.! c% N9 N8 c6 q2 M. U+ R5 c \0 o
& y; y; R4 G0 V( q7 e
The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 2 h* \% B& [( a
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
