Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 1 ?6 H* h6 T& }7 W0 [( g

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties ! \7 u5 s9 c# j. s
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 9 ^: @, M+ Y( \. N
news to report from that meeting." l/ g) A: v) b
$ d& X. F0 r4 I( ~1 F+ f# `: G6 WFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
0 g6 u! v0 a) R* Z! C7 J) Aundergraduate international students from the increase to the 6 S' U/ Q- K2 ?1 H: R
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
* U6 ~3 I' U$ {2 l; b" sstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base ' z: s4 n( g! ?! R9 d# s
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). ) V; y l& N2 G# b Y/ A- V* q
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
- p' a0 B; e" }2 Nthe differential for international graduate students.+ E/ e% g6 v5 V& s$ p
4 X p) e2 J& C4 \4 M. ?Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an & R3 O x/ o& a/ S
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to ! l r+ [( H- i5 T; t3 w
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 0 M( z" j2 V5 \0 R: _) l J
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
1 s$ N9 @/ G& W' Qleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 7 D+ Q' M4 e0 [! ]2 ^' P
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected & T. s2 e5 W3 L5 a# F
increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 5 Y$ c; A$ `4 R4 S9 K x
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
