Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. % F+ K" m7 T# P5 P4 b+ }* s) o

Dear International Undergraduate Students,( z1 U- e; z8 _6 v
d2 v; d* M8 s1 \* L) `; yYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 4 O& x( C+ c' c5 F# N" r5 O
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
4 T0 v0 b8 s# {' ~/ T) w jnews to report from that meeting.5 @6 s' N! x4 ]) D J' T
7 L( c! a) z" \. q0 m# y
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 7 v6 q- O9 @/ N2 V
undergraduate international students from the increase to the 1 u4 y r8 H4 C r) _9 |$ o& U
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international & z4 m/ o# n; |) I
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
1 p& W; O' u. ^6 \tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
. c& N- y: j- ?" H8 \Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
# _. \% Q* f7 ^# ?0 Vthe differential for international graduate students.: N+ m$ I& t) O
3 _$ m9 A9 G4 Y H4 R0 _& {. wNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
! O O! Q0 x7 G7 E' lincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
0 O6 p+ }( B! c# m; N* @220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 6 d7 H2 K: S- e: T
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 5 h' a9 y* a6 J4 x$ ~! n
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 3 s" g* q$ z. i5 P) l2 F% S
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected + U- O# G9 a$ Z2 N/ }6 R( `& G' q
increases once they are here.9 ]: p- y: L( v# Y
/ h+ p$ S; y+ T" E/ k! PThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 0 i& ?' `9 X5 g5 D$ {
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

6 \$ @ q8 v0 H) H6 mhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this * y' X/ Y x5 G) _8 J/ B) _; @5 e
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your : T& R2 R! J) I8 B: O
