Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties ) c2 I U. O$ O6 c9 p5 ?9 L* [
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
9 y$ |1 \( }- v! R/ M9 G9 Unews to report from that meeting.

. I( N5 H e+ R& i$ i gFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
9 O+ c; I5 d2 }% V3 bundergraduate international students from the increase to the
. |1 [: R2 U9 r/ f/ tdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
/ Z {) j6 U/ o. j4 Ystudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
1 I7 H, q: g& n+ R. r" U5 }tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). . x: O B6 s, H4 A7 u( m' Z$ ~
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
4 ? j% x) X0 i: hthe differential for international graduate students.. ~: k" e5 z$ S% c
' d& G5 _" U$ p' M( g4 }# rNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
$ U& }0 V# a# Y" `7 A2 [7 R# t6 [! mincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 7 C7 {2 }5 [( Y
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
) Q: L. T+ T p+ Cwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At ' Z8 F: ~! V: B8 o/ ~9 y" G5 W
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
2 j! p3 {+ ~. j+ ztuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected ' q, E* ~6 a% L2 ~$ S8 X7 I4 s$ I# E7 U
increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
. q( @2 H! T0 o6 m2 r: minternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
8 E' w" k$ v. Y8 t3 ywould like to say thank you to all of the international students that 1 _3 \; u0 [! S3 S4 W; w$ x
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
