International tuition. Let's get it on.

Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

" E- v* W) W$ U! p- r8 cYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
6 n8 r$ Q% R# Onews to report from that meeting.

First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
+ ]# {+ O$ p  F) O" T. Lundergraduate international students from the increase to the
* n: _. d0 \0 C9 Rdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
6 p* _  v) E5 V( astudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
the differential for international graduate students.

Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
+ X; @* _6 p9 H8 I8 S6 m# D. n& lincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
) o$ r8 q* M- g/ j3 b$ m7 C+ {increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
% t6 p; \- e4 A* g6 F+ Winternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
/ y4 C& @$ B1 q6 \would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
help. Thank you.
