Edmonton Transit is currently seeking applications for the challenging position of Conventional Transit Operator — for positions starting in Summer 2007. This is a long term posting with the successful applicants being called to fill positions on an ‘as-required’ basis.

FUNCTIONS:' j* u: V! k; O8 \
•        Transport passengers to and from destinations on prescribed scheduled routes.7 \* S9 u- v) V
•        Collect proper fare, issue transfers.9 P5 V* {$ F: O  f9 p5 y3 }
•        Respond to customer queries concerning transit information.
( [% Y& D% ~. ^5 b6 Q* F9 ~•        Operate a Transit diesel bus and/or trolley coach, on a day, night or split shift under varying weather 4 P* ~8 A0 B, V$ p  w* b. S, {3 e

•        Adhere to schedules.
5 _5 y# Z5 E; |/ l  o; H•        Obey and follow defensive driving guidelines, local traffic laws and Transit system regulations.   U# Q+ ]1 w! o- v+ H4 [2 S
•        Ensure the safety of all passengers., |# L4 {' y% b: s) l; G2 k
•        Handle diverse and challenging situations.
& A; n5 e0 U7 U, o& i- e; K% P•        Communicate effectively in a variety of situations.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
1 A2 m2 {% `) V3 `$ v( |/ K) `•        Grade eleven (11) or an equivalent educational level is required. Formal training in driving or public relations will be considered an asset.
$ f* C- s- G. R6 J3 a/ h- c4 _•        Proven ability to deal directly with the public, with well-developed customer service skills; the ability 7 L3 k$ u) e/ n9 z4 b8 P! E
to be diplomatic and courteous in dealing with the public, from the first passenger to the last passenger   W% T, O9 b2 V  {; a
of the day.
7 D, F) w3 f5 _" {9 L•        Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job (operate bus controls, re-set trolley poles, provide passengers with assistance i.e. strollers, wheelchairs etc.).* u9 }" i* \/ N9 P6 \( T1 t
•        Applicant must possess a valid class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's license (non-probationary and non-graduated) and must have held a valid operator's license for (3) consecutive years.9 D; e* E. J; {* ~; D( e' A
•        Selected applicants must pass the Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's class 2 written test, at their own expense, prior to training.
$ }8 f% {2 N0 t* v+ |7 B5 e•        Applicant must provide a current driver's abstract (obtained within 14 days of the video test date) 8 J' J/ H- @/ a% B" r6 D" v" e# Y
showing no suspensions and no more than 3 demerits recorded over the previous 2 year period. 3 c- }( u, y+ L8 p% a9 V7 j7 ^
•        Ability to pass a written English comprehension test, a public relations video-test, a driving skill
) H4 g' l. O( V+ o' ?. Gvideo-test, a Functional Abilities Recruitment Evaluation (F.A.R.E.) test, a pre-employment City medical examination and a Police Security clearance (at their own expense, prior to training).
" |+ ]5 Z: h( S7 r•        Successful completion of the ETS Training Program.
0 h, _( A' z/ }; S8 |" V•        Internal ETS applicants must have completed all mandatory in-house training.

HOURS OF WORK:
  j9 t# n$ \7 b. x3 fVarious hours of shift work (straight or split shift), any time of the day, any 5 days of the week $ {7 h% r5 |/ r8 j, c0 G
1st year:  Guaranteed minimum 67.4 hours bi-weekly
# Q- i% a& l7 S- g6 PThereafter:  Guaranteed minimum 74 hours biweekly

SALARY RANGE:  401, Salary Grade: 004 # C. X( A( w% l4 Z
Training Rate:  $16.56 Hourly
" I3 M/ D" G& t) J2 F% R& {; \Post Training Rate:  $20.36 - $25.45 Hourly
6 l, h: W, o& V" ~' j6 w- T( [8 MThe rates quoted are in accordance with a collective agreement between the Union and the City of Edmonton.
