CHIEF RETURNING OFFICER

Remuneration: $6,032.00 contract

; C" o$ b/ V( ~+ u+ G' j3 ]5 P. sJOB SUMMARY:  The Chief Returning Officer reports to the President of  5 |3 A$ x7 B" H* k. J: Q
the Students' Union and oversees all electoral logistics as per Bylaw  5 m( ]" x/ ~- c2 N$ b4 D  j. g
2000.  The Chief Returning Officer shall be recommended to Students'  6 z" O5 u( S8 n- r- J, V/ Z
Council in the manner set out in the Council Administration Committee  
- |; A- b5 l) H7 R) R* e. {; Y) uStanding Orders by April 15 and serve from May 1 to April 30 of the  8 H, _+ K4 F/ {+ o* ^
year following their appointment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:, J! z: X/ K/ h) P$ j9 H' }) h( Z" z

3 R* {1 |1 @8 y  S, z: e1) To run the elections as per Bylaws 2000. \& G8 ?4 e/ c. x/ m  E, h
" {9 D; }9 I; T, w
2) To run referenda/plebiscites as per Bylaw 2000.) R: X7 x- [' L* ]2 u  j

3) To choose the Deputy Returning Officer(s) and assign their duties.# V* a* C9 w$ Y4 h& n

* d$ H$ y! F1 `+ ~0 M  D. [4) To organize polls during elections/referenda, including appointing  
2 r+ {5 H: i% ^9 [2 \: a+ P& Sadequate poll staff and situating polls at appropriate locations  
  P' \6 P* h) T; g' B/ Jacross campus, and advertising the poll locations.3 H8 C: U8 {, q% q
/ P3 D! U( z6 y0 K0 \$ ~+ R% [' Q3 v
5) To oversee the physical count of the ballots during elections/ $ [/ M$ z4 F4 ~+ h/ N
referenda.7 E% |7 N4 V' l- n
4 T, P$ ~& M! ~- x
6) To report the result of an election/referendum to the appropriate  2 W; F' d) _$ N4 c5 r' ]+ V
parties.

7) To facilitate classroom speaking arrangements during an election/ ! L9 x, [( \% ]9 y
referendum.& x4 v: U$ @) ^  W& u8 o

" b2 \' r& s4 I/ p, W To enforce budgetary regulations as stipulated in the Elections  8 `4 k* _% a7 z% v* G
Bylaw 2000.9 w) \. G" u) C# \7 f

10) To be available to all parties during elections/referenda for a  2 P! D. I* j/ v" o
minimum of four (4) working hours a day, between Monday to Friday,  & Z* \. \2 V. C, Q0 ]
from the first working day after nominations close until the last day  . Y" P+ {8 W/ s1 b" S
of voting.  These hours are to be posted in advance.* Q) ~( _3 S: j, @
- z) h# Y3 A1 F3 n$ r
11) To act as the arbitrator in any dispute which may arise during  9 `3 q' ]* L- E. a' G7 J" B& H  d
the course of an election/referendum.
5 c) {/ C2 {% P3 P3 ~, ~6 q3 t0 Q% v7 r& `8 I4 Q4 o2 ~5 E/ u
12) To ensure that a cost effective and accurate ballot counting  
2 r0 @/ Q0 u& r7 A' L+ J6 h/ Fprocess is in place.1 E7 I0 G& L: Z/ w3 W4 \. O' ~

4 Q2 W& q# k- n1 F9 Y$ A13) To submit to Students' Council, prior to April 30, a final report  
( [! }+ K8 q7 X9 C# {of activities and recommendations.6 z0 c. e+ [9 H: S+ g

" ~; b. h$ v2 `14) To organize a minimum of one (1) forum to be held during the week  ! v3 i9 E. h& W2 q; `5 ~# p
of campaigning.6 _5 y/ U- v9 l$ }4 r# D. o

15) Perform other job related duties as required by the Council

5 z3 f$ S  T, K- [QUALIFICATIONS:
! V% u, ]$ W5 d  }; L5 A3 [
% l+ @; q. D2 h0 P% v1) Must be an undergrad student registered in at least one (1) course  
! {- H4 N, e) L0 m$ M/ b+ a7 Tfor each of the terms of Winter Session and shall be a full Students'  1 e% Y/ j, y) v% B1 l" H
Union member.

  A. a! ]9 y; d$ W9 K( I2) Must have some experience in student elections./ q' l& ]2 l, j7 ]8 A
, _) Q3 f! r3 e
3) Shall not concurrently hold a position on Students' Council, or  
6 V2 y# i$ \1 |) gany of its standing boards, committees, or any other paid position  4 @4 G  V( I' [! T
with the Students' Union.

/ E7 Z: \* f; E( ~4) Willingness and ability to work varying hours.

" O4 o/ @8 y3 P% `5) Excellent project management skills are required.

5) Ability to deal effectively with Students' Union and University  : p/ D8 w3 Q, v$ ^
staff, students and the general public.
