受到西方反共舆论的影响，特里尔人长期以来以马克思出生在该城市为耻。今年是马克思诞辰200周年，中国赠送了马克思的大型雕塑。由于中国国际地位的崛起和潜在中国游客的涌入，特里尔人将会以马克思为荣。
