Today I was volunteering at a post office. A man in an old jacket with uncombed hair came to the counter. He had a wallet in his hand, and put it on the counter. He told me:
9 I- d/ G" ?0 W- c+ ]$ O% v"I am going to send it back". ! b' f$ w3 p. d" c6 ]# j
I did not understand what he meant by "it", because usually people would send a letter or a parcel back to the sender, and I did not see he had any of those. So I asked him:8 s; T( e3 F8 n4 {1 g
"I am sorry, what are you sending back?" . U/ F- o9 `# {9 A
He said, "the Wallet, I am sending back the wallet." Then he added: "I am going to pay the postage."
1 Z3 u* u T. |- _- l"Oh, you found a wallet, and you are going to send it back to the person who lost it?" g! U# A1 A: E, A& o
"Yes, I did."
6 Y$ V( u" G6 \2 S* s/ Q. O4 TFinally I understood: this dishevelled man found a wallet, and he was going to return it to the owner by post.
4 ?! q& l* y6 HHe took the ID card from the wallet, and showed me the address of the loser of the wallet. I saw there were several one-hundred bills in the wallet. ; }3 z5 p: ^0 b2 c8 y& v
"Are you going to take some money from the wallet to pay the postage?"! E' H ?, V6 k$ I) V% p% ^
"No, I am not. I do not do those things." o& z9 I C8 K- d) _9 I* n% _2 i
He took out his wallet, which was nearly worn-out, small, and almost empty. There were some coins inside.
5 \* P' n+ d8 b2 mI gave him a bubbled envelope, and instructed him where to write the addresses. He wrote the owner's address, but stopped at writing a return address. He asked:4 r% I* o' s$ L: v' x
"Is it okay that I do not write this part?"5 e$ l) m& ~$ T. s1 ]
"Yes, you may." I thought he must want to be a nameless hero. But he said:5 q1 d) z7 a8 e9 }* S: l1 R4 K
"I do not have an address."5 h3 L7 J2 N8 \ x
I was surprised: "oh, where do you live?", b- {0 _; A/ W* m$ o- t
He did not look up, and said: "I do not have a home."
( p2 N1 ~% |5 U3 H7 r' xMy heart had a sudden jump. I realized that this is a homeless man who found money but was sending it back to the person who lost it.
( j* D, U) K3 e* V: m: xHe did not a posses a home, but he had a big heart. He had the precious fortune of being a man of integrity. T& Y4 p5 ]% h" r$ l0 v4 Z) H8 X3 Y
