谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语' h2 c2 C* J) G2 p0 O' a  F

8 v& Y* [) X( I
( U- U9 e9 @6 R5 \' u在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯
$ ?7 G; a; |6 i2 H4 s, J0 P之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。
! q7 i9 o/ o1 M( d# I# |9 u- i& A若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!
$ E4 A, V) J7 ?( E) p3 E, V1 V) c, x  g
(1) empty suit:, g0 v0 t( ?' ^! U, |9 w: D' |  i
指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。
% C7 |; D* O' P, ~(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)
" p) O+ f- Q" \' g4 p! o例如:6 v; Q4 I$ Y% [0 ~1 A
An empty suit generally gets no attention from the public.2 M' @: u8 B- ~0 P/ N
(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)% H# @" D" ^& z: Y- V0 c
Mr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.9 D+ }4 k1 B7 K- M2 O! z
(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)
. X5 Z4 o( c8 ~5 L; f, B虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:
" f+ \  r( k6 g( y3 K8 iThe company is filled with a lot of empty suits.
! w. }5 ^5 w3 j6 r& t(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)
3 C  W# ]. l- A" Q(2) fair-haired boy:
) g9 G/ u/ @9 g6 M) g* {. ]! q# w指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)
7 N' y4 u6 h; I+ a) O(通常用单数,当名词用)
0 |* e5 o" P1 i0 e例如:
( b8 g- O2 w/ ]/ G0 ]! qMr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.# Q$ i! |1 h4 x  {- q" B' |
( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)$ J: Q- L2 e% l+ p
Not being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.
/ R6 z+ g. a, j- Z(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。)
4 ~  K9 s5 E% Z( J0 q* E5 U- f有时也可用复数:
. e3 F  G8 K$ w& n% s0 G" k6 p4 QMr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.* Y- x) D, j/ t8 i, I
(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。). \$ c* _( T( W: ~- Z
Fair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.
6 I5 b+ R. z0 a  o" y(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。)
8 Y6 l+ b3 z1 s5 J0 k! h) [(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法)
- s, i/ h) e( e8 ]+ d" f1 Q(3) fishing expedition:& j5 @9 }$ r8 q, V2 x+ _; V
为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)* J' ?2 `8 t1 ~4 B
(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)1 A* ~0 h0 Z8 u4 M7 c7 y
例如:" f3 K+ l' T+ A
The judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.1 _2 D2 R+ \% B9 S9 D
(法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)' _+ ~+ x8 ]# k, R0 V- r
The police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case.
$ X2 x0 e. x9 S  d; V; |(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)- Z5 ^! [8 s7 n9 M) [6 ^' v
(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict)
* n7 |( T- c+ pThe reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.
9 M9 j* U& p* T7 A3 E& d. M(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)3 @/ X$ X- T( H# X: W' e$ g
偶尔也有人用复数:
  x9 f# ~4 o) ~( |# L, @& iSeveral fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office." |5 A. W+ \, \$ O
(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)* u' r/ Y" x- J7 }+ G3 \% W
(4) filthy rich:" X1 k4 x9 q( c. L6 s
意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy). O* ]% }( z7 m* }) `+ M
(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)
) b( X& P1 B& y5 X4 \1 y多半当形容词用。例如:1 Z: m  T0 `. z5 ~7 b
With a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.
# k! X4 L+ c; |/ K; J. M( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)
  ]" n% W( C; W1 o; Q7 d0 m0 T2 `Despite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.
. M) z& N3 B3 M# l3 j; i(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)( P- J* K0 |2 w9 y& M; H5 q- p% n
A filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.
3 m) }4 t. f* D& c(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)
& v' L: x2 o* K( O# e; t5 n/ FFilthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.
: Y6 t( R( o2 S% j(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。)
. C+ y7 @) V7 w1 D(注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法)% x& Q* I) D* {4 F& v( S
(5) fairy godmother:, ^. w2 X) d" T8 b9 |: W# ]
指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance)3 Z4 A* {/ I3 |
(多半指有钱的女人)
7 h- c, v% F7 q. `2 G, ~& k(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:
) k' _& Q  |* I3 i7 T- D% R! d( {. ]6 fMr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.
; B- D8 W' k4 {* E6 k& s9 Y(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)! D2 x; {4 x: U  L
After lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.) F$ i/ \' S$ D
(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)3 V% w) D  N7 |# T
有时也用复数:
8 L: z' o3 w  n/ sOnly business women can act as fairy godmothers.# a6 @7 a( _$ i0 b- @! J( r
(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)
1 `- ~* R) B; B: \) M+ O* RIn Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered.
$ \4 t( {6 k4 _# P- B/ t' k(在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。)
- B: K) w3 Q* j$ C! c

/ t! _4 r2 b8 k6)eye opener:
$ [  {5 @- F1 x2 ]; P指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)- t+ g: u' o. p% A- w4 ^
(当名词用;通常只用单数)% ~0 }* M- L" j8 J
例如:
& ]& x: m; N2 ], }. sYour wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.
7 U0 Q: y( A  ^4 e8 a& r(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)/ C* W; H% T! W8 C' `' w7 z
Mr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.' e9 }0 t5 t: F5 g! a; ~/ P8 U
(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)
9 [0 p& p7 i" n5 G3 t! XThe popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants.
1 ~9 e) i) C# B5 q3 c2 u1 k" `(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)( P( i8 }$ Z4 z: T3 o4 U. B0 g
Some American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people.7 s6 a4 y3 V( K0 N# P, ~
(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。): ?- H" _0 g. L; j
(7) hot dog:
2 O, ^6 X; ~$ m4 b: A指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)
& A0 G& d) {: P& C4 G3 \9 e例如:7 Z' N; r; H7 J+ ~$ |8 j
Some young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.
  l( t. X7 i: x! }& [(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)
) `$ x: u) ]3 q( O; t- q(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)
2 F$ N7 \* G, lIn front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.
" ~! z) G( K# d8 P) r(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)
( m5 I/ z) H5 F$ W# ]9 H) a(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging): L" w% S8 L2 B& U( g8 _
During the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer." V9 ~4 ^4 B$ {" W& [# ?: r$ b
(在空军表演时,一位飞行员做惊险的飞行动作。)4 b/ I( O  G- ~  O8 A; c" G0 O' Z; C* R
也指真正的热狗食物:
( w* Y% H% N% D0 f( i$ QThe hot dog is one of the favorite fast food in the U.S.
) j" ^* X! p7 E4 d2 L7 k(在美国热狗是一种受欢迎的快餐。)0 W5 ]  R5 A& ^/ T3 _
也可表达欣赏的心情:
8 l% E. k. l# w! D$ L, y$ MHot dog ! What great news for me.
: }  J: I; N2 R0 N8 \6 F  q(真棒!对我来说是好消息。)
/ k8 ?) |( B2 W: R7 D2 I; ^" Y(8)eager beaver:
0 W9 n" s: V' e指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others)
* W( S5 l' A5 R(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)
* E+ }5 h# ]- }7 a# Y5 B: _(当名词用,可指男女)
& [. `/ P/ @: S8 G例如:
- V1 Z. Z7 Y) Y& gJohn seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.+ A3 B" }" X1 ~% C/ K9 J
(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)
+ l; u: V  Y' y6 Z2 u' c- V- BBeing an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues.
1 Y, `$ H1 H7 N(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)
) g/ j  r' I) z* B5 e2 YDoes Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?
( v3 {- I" C0 U5 A; `: V" ?(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)3 y+ [; m* E0 Q$ Y, G" ^" E- s
You may find some eager beavers in any organizations.! A8 y, X- g8 x9 d
(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。): @- i4 w/ m" O/ B
(9)doubting Thomas:. [9 }( b% _7 k
这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)
  l: }, B. y* O5 M- M- \(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活)
% q8 @3 k7 c; z% p# _5 \(当名词用)
, V# }; v( y, e& F例如:
* `* q, n9 Q* G& e5 bI am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.* V6 |5 G1 @# {4 t  \
(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)& J& A$ r! d! v
There must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.
  `! }2 l' t' M(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。)/ G/ R' _0 o" S4 _8 R
也可用复数:# n0 d8 k+ P8 p! ?0 m/ j
My friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people." z( X- r( x( R3 t( [& B6 Z
(我朋友对许多中国商人不信任。)$ F) m( j# ]7 y  @
If there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.
8 t" P$ w+ R  _5 v) q# }* Q(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。)9 \* |# M+ {! A7 x9 @
(10)dragon lady:
: _- X, G& n" N1 M/ A指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用)
& Y+ F" b/ d& v2 _) ]6 N例如:% `$ R: U8 p4 M% k) F9 l
The chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.2 _) R; ]6 m. \/ N5 L) i  G
(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)8 \, ?0 y9 p+ p
I am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady.8 t* [/ s' k. i5 r% S8 h' ]4 I' F
(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)& X. U/ A& z7 L! T5 }) p
Should your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?+ w4 w. K0 c! m
(假如你的女友成了凶恶的女人,你要与她分手吗?): c+ f# P: H6 K  T  |. ]
也可用复数:
% _! P! U- ~  I0 Y7 t) cThere may be many dragon ladies in our community.7 Z" C+ v+ x4 z& f# c9 d" r0 T$ O. E
(在我们社区里也许有不少凶女人。)
: U. B/ x  b  V4 ?注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
