谈英语俚语

谈英语俚语4 c1 A1 t( V& N9 B1 }  V+ B

* Q- g9 K: @4 b7 V) _0 v2 f. x  f
: `# d0 Z# Y: q0 D  p7 R在中文报章杂志上,常看到一些英语俚语(口语)的中文翻译。诸如「黑羊」、「踢水桶」、「阿奇里斯
7 ~. f$ n! U- G: X# L1 Z之踝」等等。其实这些译文都是来自英语「black sheep」、「kick the bucket」和「Achille's heel」。( [7 R: h* S6 j
若是这些译文不附加原文予以解释,恐怕「迷惑」的读者,不在少数。这不是影响了语文的沟通目的吗?为此,介绍一些这类的英语俚语(在此称之为「特别字眼」),也许对某些读者会有点助益!
; U) P! L1 s; [) |- ]8 h# P: Y# e& W
) p8 o4 z: A- q8 t% B' k  J- @(1) empty suit:" K+ \. P8 t( B& ^; _* ^( ], h
指不重要的人或假冒者 ( an unimportant person or a phony) 多半用在商业上,当名词用。: ?  Y$ c- W, I' \3 k/ m
(这本是business term,指虽然穿著整齐全套的 business suit,却不能干、没有能力,不受尊敬的人。)
3 D, l8 h/ j8 u# m! T9 Z例如:
5 }7 t  u: R6 |$ C1 CAn empty suit generally gets no attention from the public., e9 S" G$ e: _7 @
(一位虚伪不实的人,通常不会受到大众的注意。)4 Y+ k; J2 q1 F9 v
Mr. Lee acts like a big shot, but he is just an empty suit.2 |& R0 O# G9 f
(李先生装著像位大人物,但他只是不重要的人。)& N* K) ]& ]  @
虽然这句话,多半只用单数,但有时也用复数:5 T. v- r, K- K+ a( B* t1 D
The company is filled with a lot of empty suits.
( M# \: @$ Q$ p2 e& U(这公司有许多虚伪不重要的人)
3 g- M0 ~' L% _(2) fair-haired boy:
- Z) ~7 z  I% T: K# _& I+ r' Y指得宠的人,也就是宠儿,多半指男人(a fa-vorite person usually referring to a man)
) O! `5 y, D4 O$ u- o3 a(通常用单数,当名词用)# M: q: p8 }" N; ]5 }8 g
例如:
/ O8 t7 W4 {% y9 `Mr. Cheney has become a fair-haired boy to the presi-dent.1 R3 b5 u3 V6 f8 E! S
( Cheney 先生变成总统的宠儿。)
! c8 S; H) \/ E: s4 a5 yNot being a fair-haired boy, Mr. Wong never gets pay-raises and promotions.
7 }9 o7 ?* D. n+ {3 U(王先生不得宠,从未得到加薪和升级。), T. t& G) D4 A2 u5 j7 M
有时也可用复数:
; L- }  c( o5 x1 _Mr. Bush selected two former fair-haired boys for his cabinet.
. P3 q0 m' B5 J(Bush 先生为他的内阁选用两位过去的宠儿。)( \0 T, {7 u, u4 N% W, U. c9 S% X9 c
Fair-haired boys tend to receive special treatment by their bosses.
% M# q# c) ~% K3 D( m(得宠的人,较会受到他们上司的特别待遇。); u* i$ N& y9 r! g! w
(但没有 fair-haired girl 的说法)) c+ P! U4 I' B1 [" O
(3) fishing expedition:
. S( u: S# X( h, s6 k4 ~  G5 r为了搜罗新闻材料而进行盘问或调查(Try to ask questions to get more useful information)
) ?! _+ _0 x/ y1 @/ Y(这句话本是 legal term,当名词用,多半用单数)# t! n! i% ]' S9 R  ]
例如:
2 d4 E. R$ a% Q* A8 W2 cThe judge said the prosecutor was on a fishing expedi-tion and stopped him.
. P: G0 Y7 P$ x" l" z6 ](法官说原告为搜罗罪证而进行调查,要他停止。)
1 N3 I; t" c$ SThe police are on a fishing expedition in order to solve(或 resolve)the murder case.' ^8 G$ t6 A, }5 I0 u
(警察进行调查盘问,以便侦破谋杀案。)
% H  x2 d% N" C  k(注:solve 和 resolve 都有「解决」的意思,但通常solve用在「问题上」,resolve 用在「争执」上。solve the problem 而 resolve the conflict)% t! _3 x; Q8 T* k& `, p' u
The reporter went on a fishing expedition about the president's involvement in the Iraq War.
3 R/ a2 L# y9 D, |/ e+ W0 R$ ]4 Q(记者搜罗有关总统卷入伊拉克战争的新闻资料。)
1 k5 f, G% A: Z+ E; j1 G$ M  A偶尔也有人用复数:% }! S3 W# c. e+ \4 N) e
Several fishing expeditions have been made before he decides to run for office.2 U* p) p5 j" r8 m
(在他决定竞选之前,他做了数次的收集资料调查。)
& q7 U% i3 w& G) M% V: ?(4) filthy rich:
+ w% E/ Y+ m( h% _& H& O意思是很富有,很有钱。(very wealthy)
& ]/ Q0 s2 B! R7 _. G5 `2 S(未必是不义之财或肮脏钱)
+ P# {* K2 ^1 [  j多半当形容词用。例如:
( e! H6 ~# G+ Z' ZWith a beautiful mansion and an expensive car, Mr. B must be filthy rich.8 E1 C2 J7 `3 |7 z, `. ]$ N3 i; B+ W
( B先生住著富丽堂皇的大厦,开著昂贵的汽车,他一定很有钱。)
0 ^( @, a2 W' X: R; j4 q% NDespite being filthy rich, Mr. C is still leading his life in a frugal way.8 j4 h0 [. z% O( T# J
(尽管 C 先生很富有,他仍然过著简朴的生活。)
& i/ f( R, e. j* B8 YA filthy rich person tends to have a superiority complex toward others.
, e: Q. y+ h+ ~3 O" O(有钱者对他人有优越感的倾向。)+ \8 ?  X( d1 ]7 ?/ y2 D
Filthy rich people are not necessarily well-respected unless they possess noble characters.
; ]7 B* C( J5 M- t" z' D(有钱人未必受人尊敬,除非有高尚的品格。)
; E) v4 w1 \% D/ P9 r3 ](注:但没有 cleanly rich 的说法)0 z) X- A# \2 E/ M* K7 D
(5) fairy godmother:1 Q9 Y% o% H' x
指及时慷慨提供帮助的人(someone who unex-pectedly gives generous assistance)
: O% C7 @" j1 V3 T(多半指有钱的女人)
  v1 x6 U' q6 Y; }5 \. ~(这是来自 fairy tale, 指女人有 magical power;因为童话故事里没有男人,故不说 fairy godfather。当名词用。例如:# q  Z7 q9 A* Z( {, x/ w
Mr. A has a fairy godmother who gave him fifty thou-sand dollars.
  \' c3 ?2 a; }/ V( v8 P5 [(一位有钱的女人,帮助A先生五万元。)
6 R6 \5 f3 |: zAfter lifelong savings, Mrs. B donated all her money to a charity organization like a fairy godmother.( @, }% A- T5 C% E
(B 太太将一生的积蓄全部捐给慈善机构。)$ E) i5 r6 d/ q$ z8 e, d
有时也用复数:' X9 t+ x6 j. P. [" t7 \5 [8 o5 Y
Only business women can act as fairy godmothers.* V/ [3 K. T, c9 B6 s0 C
(只有商场上的女人才能提供金钱帮助他人。)
: }" T( v4 q) L4 \In Chinese society very few fairy godmothers can be discovered.
- n' a6 I3 m2 f1 c$ ](在中国社会里,很少有钱的女人慷慨捐助。)3 ^6 j  f' [" [! n

& \9 S6 ?; C7 N4 U4 x0 N6)eye opener:
3 b$ B2 U% [3 p1 [' i9 t指令人瞠目的事物或使人恍然大悟的发现。也就是惊人的新发现或启示(shocking news or revela-tion)  D/ P& w- ?( D- u" u& {
(当名词用;通常只用单数)6 M, I  W& {3 Z! U3 j4 ~
例如:
: w& S! i. n- G$ h) P& t8 o7 lYour wonderful article on marriage was certainly an eye opener to many youngsters.
; F& b1 D7 ]  c! {(你那篇有关婚姻的好文章,使许多年轻人获得启示。)' Q/ u2 _9 O/ {+ S" F$ e: Q
Mr. Wong's speech about U.S./ China policy seemed to be an eye opener.
: T6 o8 Z) i# T- p0 T; A+ g9 J(王先生的中美政策讲演使人恍然大悟。)# P# L( z( I7 H5 p7 E+ e
The popular World Journal in North America is an eye opener for many Chinese immigrants./ x6 z- H/ x  n" o' B' x/ V7 h/ g# g
(大名鼎鼎的世界日报是北美许多中国移民惊喜的新发现。)) }" @" F9 A1 v/ j( I
Some American customs and ways of thinking can be an eye opener to many Chinese people.
) R  x- E7 x" ?6 @  z(美国一些的风俗习惯和想法,让许多老中感到惊奇。), {; c  F( t  b+ p1 w! f; H! M8 q
(7) hot dog:9 \% W! W: ?1 A+ p6 J; K& L
指喜欢卖弄冒险的举动,或爱出锋头的惊险动作。(one who performs showy or dangerous stunts ; a show off) ( 可当名词或动词用)7 Q1 n) S# v, }$ ^' L
例如:: n: x) f. B" B& n- Q3 U
Some young people are hot dogs behind the wheel, speeding all the time.) P8 _7 L) L1 E; t" m
(一些年轻人开车时,常做些超速的惊险动作。)
* S) a! q, w3 J6 I. _" Y(这里的 hot dogs = hot doggers)/ k4 F9 r3 i4 C# z$ v% j
In front of his girlfriend, the teenager was trying to hot dog.
; T0 x) F9 K$ ^6 _(在女友面前,年轻人做出一些卖弄技巧的花招。)
& X+ U5 Z9 R, H  U3 I8 O; P(动词时态是:hot dogged, hot dogging)
! q+ ~$ @' L( d- g3 w# [& p, _% tDuring the air force show, one of the pilots was a dan-gerous hot dogging flyer.) O" l, s- ^0 M$ I) _5 H( q" l
(在空军表演时,一位飞行员做惊险的飞行动作。)0 n4 C+ D7 [9 ^7 d. e
也指真正的热狗食物:$ E& A6 H5 r  H
The hot dog is one of the favorite fast food in the U.S.9 j2 |6 e8 t* ~4 J  T! ], r
(在美国热狗是一种受欢迎的快餐。)
( |0 K/ m1 D1 x) y4 {也可表达欣赏的心情:

" j" U; ]: ^# o$ A指做事非常卖力的人,也许为了给人良好的印象。(one who likes to work harder in order to impress others)
/ b3 V, H8 ?) l& w(这句话是来自二次世界大战,新兵为了讨好长官而卖力工作。)( f& U5 w* G, J
(当名词用,可指男女)' H. H& n. _3 Z: N1 x/ y" P# S
例如:
6 s$ ?$ `+ A  F! J8 W5 |John seems an eager beaver because he always comes early and leaves late.8 f4 F0 ?# M' H) {/ m4 W
(John 似乎是十分卖力的人,因为他总是来得早,走得晚。)! n# b5 j, ]4 E+ X5 \, R
Being an eager beaver, he sometimes is not well-liked by his colleagues." O! `+ O: \4 H+ D1 m/ v
(他做事异常卖力,有时不受同事喜欢。)
) w; C8 x) {* @" m5 Q. B- J. ODoes Mr. B have a long-lasting attitude as an eager beaver?
+ }2 M3 I1 N6 M(B 先生做事非常卖力,那是长久以来的态度吗?)
9 ~4 V- u+ ^, rYou may find some eager beavers in any organizations., V( H' n# K) Q5 J. e
(在任何机关里,你总会发现一些对上司竭力讨好的人。)
7 V! `7 B- q! T- W0 n- o' u. }! T, s(9)doubting Thomas:
1 b! c: ?# Q+ g  s' c这是指不信任所有的人,几乎是一种怀疑主义者。(one who is always doubtful toward others)/ E9 J! k5 K4 C* N! j
(这原出于圣经,因耶稣门徒 Thomas 不信基督的复活)+ U+ G8 A. [" M' W
(当名词用)
5 j& y: R( S0 `+ H3 t# T例如:
( {* G: _+ i9 W+ {/ E" OI am not trying to be a doubting Thomas about Mr. Wong's keeping promise.$ O, b/ p0 K* H2 e2 z. u
(我不怀疑王先生的承诺。)
8 ]9 c4 e; q7 X1 @There must have been some unpleasant experiences for Mr. B to become a doubting Thomas.& i; a& g, t/ v) e* G! K" y2 o* q
(B 先生不信任他人,也许因为有不愉快的经验所致。)
; [# f% \% O5 {0 D也可用复数:
4 N  [$ ^4 O# |My friends are doubting Thomases toward many Chi-nese business people.- e' d2 n( A% I" T- V0 b
(我朋友对许多中国商人不信任。)
# A* J9 C1 u/ H, ZIf there are too many doubting Thomases in our society, people will lose confidence with one another.! u2 a- R1 d$ X8 c8 Z
(假如社会上有太多的怀疑主义者,那么人与人之间的信心就会丧失。). v" G" o  s" \! ?) ^6 D+ Q
(10)dragon lady:
, U* X' p% G8 Q- Q指生气、不友善或凶险的女人。(angry, un-friendly or dangerous woman)(当名词用). ^$ P6 F, B  D9 i0 a6 n  K' Y! R1 V
例如:2 O# ^/ R# y, V( `
The chairman's secretary is so snoffy and nasty that she is considered a dragon lady.
6 H* i: `$ _( N, R4 o% w(主席的秘书,很自大,脾气差,她被视为凶恶的女人。)
% ?  ~( k7 O3 e9 d. L) L! U1 u( VI am sure no woman likes to be called a dragon lady.( h+ ]: V7 V$ m" k" [1 M8 E
(我相信没有女人喜欢被称为凶恶的女人。)
; K# \+ x0 ?& G0 r# z0 XShould your girlfriend happens to be a dragon lady, are you going to breakup with her?
! k* I5 a( N" \: S3 I0 N(假如你的女友成了凶恶的女人,你要与她分手吗?)
/ Z# O7 K+ o8 @也可用复数:6 I+ ]4 a$ t+ A. X
There may be many dragon ladies in our community.
. o0 o3 y- h+ p(在我们社区里也许有不少凶女人。)  e# Y+ ^& ?) b
注:老外指凶恶男人,不用 dragon gentleman,利用英国侦探小说里的中国恶棍傅满洲(Fu Manchu)为代表
