Newcomers are being offered some help when shopping for a home in Edmonton’s tight housing market.
) l* X, w+ u6 D$ RImmigrant women and their families can now access a “household toolkit” crafted by a local service group for new immigrant families, through real estate agents.
+ f: D: \* l" q8 _3 B. S; X; d
; \$ \ X9 W. \3 m# d6 UIn the tool kit are 75 common hand tools – like a hammer and screwdriver – as well a book on how to buy a home, a home maintenance schedule and other items.

“The tools are a symbol of hope for people trying to build new lives in Edmonton,” said Madeline Sarafinchan, president of the Edmonton Real Estate Board. 4 Q7 f3 g0 B" N' V9 g8 J

The program was announced by a group called Changing Together… A Centre for Immigrant Women.

Josephine Pallard, the group’s executive director, said Alberta’s economic boom has caused a housing shortage that makes it more difficult for immigrants to find a place to live and integrate into Canadian society. 2 k; Q7 g! U5 K+ P9 h
