1 Go to your service panel and locate the circuit breaker for the area in which you will be working. Shut the breaker off. If your breakers aren't labeled, turn them off one by one until you find the breaker for your area.+ w$ ~% k6 D* [+ l+ i* J
2 Test to confirm that the power is off within the outlet. Insert the tip of the voltage sensor carefully into the outlet. If it doesn't light up, the power is off.

3 Remove the outlet cover plate and unscrew the mounting screws, taking care not to touch the wires or terminals. Remove the outlet receptacle.+ }) J: h% ^7 h
4 Test both of the wires coming out of the receptacle with your voltage sensor. Testing the outlet for power is not always accurate, as the receptacle may be damaged but still contain live wires.
7 Y; p% c% @: N% b5 Unscrew the terminals from the outlet and pull away the wires, taking care not to twist them. If you see any nicks or other damage to the wires, use the wire strippers to snip off their ends and re-strip them.8 w: g# S5 M5 a# o2 [' @9 R
6 Take your GFCI outlet and turn it so that the back faces you. You will see one set of terminals marked "line," and one marked "load." Connect your wires to the terminals marked "line." The neutral (white) wire connects to the silver terminal, and the hot (black) wire goes to the brass terminal.

8 Turn the circuit breaker back on. Test the new outlet for power by inserting your voltage sensor into the outlet. If it lights up, you have succeeded. If there is no current, turn the breaker back off, remove the outlet from the wall, and check your connections.
