You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,! E; G* l  v( t
, E- _* U3 e0 K) }3 w
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.4 ^' Z! Q5 q  [7 q1 [0 X

! C- V! T7 \! n4 X4 QHis name was Kyle.6 D6 x" Y& s4 e0 g

1 u0 I/ m! U9 aIt looked like he was carrying all of his
( \7 P! p8 i3 c+ x! iBooks.
% h7 J8 C. O9 J8 @
- o9 X, |. q7 R1 g' ~! K% FI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
, `: R, Q( _7 f1 a/ g/ v. s7 L5 }  L, \' J& _3 C
He must really be a nerd."& W5 V: k, {6 r4 C: M3 F5 r

9 x5 u1 j7 ?/ e- G$ ]' tI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.; w7 l, M5 m" a+ C' B8 z& @
# _( w1 j" W9 X9 q' Z4 t+ ~
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
( s; |9 B8 B/ b: K2 [+ l4 z# v
( B' p- D& ?  s! EThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
: U! A8 K* }& Z. q9 f( Z+ J6 K2 I4 i' C% P) r/ |6 u
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
9 h% r7 F. m' }1 ]+ `7 o
5 ~2 D, p3 n, OHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes" |; j8 s' L6 B" o1 |* s

4 Q. t% A1 ~$ l/ y( t+ o6 mMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
2 T) p6 c5 B5 r+ A2 N2 E% D
& e- F$ g% s9 R! U& f* l; I+ IAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.$ p$ q+ P- {5 q( u
1 J* G# Q# a# u& h- p
They really should get lives./ T& j2 S; m. R, p- Y# {
+ a; j& D3 F( q& |# V+ H7 z- `
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"
! }5 z' z' |. Y8 V: o* {' G/ ^/ u; J7 h3 V  w( e) S, t% }
There was a big smile on his face.) R, G& X1 C' B& @3 H

: k, T7 j& k$ W5 x* |" cIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
$ H! F% i8 o% q  R! X5 S3 ~) ]
0 f7 Q5 @8 k  nI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
% m+ y( }/ t5 ^4 x+ E9 S
& c, x- O! ~  _  `& Q: lAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
- `- M/ }$ b* B/ V, Z, y1 S7 q7 s) U& D: f0 A! }& ^
He said he had gone to private school before now.
! z0 e6 Q4 Z5 {* ?% ^) ~% j& U/ P# z" R$ j2 P: L1 j/ H
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.7 ]8 u9 p0 U0 X* O" O% r! X" [# O3 u
' h7 ?. M: s2 e1 g
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.; ]2 P6 ?" I1 q. u( V$ l; {

$ h( Q$ i1 L! U. m4 cHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.2 E! |2 Q* t  e- I' j6 d

8 n! B" L3 ~/ ~+ {- CI asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.3 x; M" `% U, c3 I4 y
/ ~9 D2 c' ?% U2 n
He said yes.9 Q0 f7 F6 d, w9 q# F- i/ @$ T
: m& o4 Y+ V# ^" z, t
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
# J2 H' K5 X) ~9 _
" z0 X% Y6 _# O: G, @3 SMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
& t0 ^% I: w  s& q# i2 o
, S# R: Z6 j  H6 C* ^I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
2 u9 B. b' _7 r1 C- V2 s0 J1 t- p  i, U! N' A1 W
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.7 [; C% w: y6 ~* a+ ~
& \8 r  f( ]( I0 M
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.# X5 D8 X' B5 ^
+ x$ p' x! J# `- k" M; n
When we were seniors, we began to think" g) Z; L1 X$ {
About college.0 F) v7 \( n* b1 H+ C( S9 r

+ J! O6 m7 e- v+ I. J% lKyle decided on Georgetown, and I
- Q& R- }$ G6 z& tWas going to Duke.+ {" B8 s2 f% F* F- j- v# H3 T

8 x4 l7 g7 ~% DI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.  I' p& w# J6 m! J7 D% ]  Z( t

6 j2 S- n) \* e. U6 gHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
0 l7 l( T& V9 i/ C  K/ F' R: w4 ^% i. h; ^8 I
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.
1 o& P( i, G% |( |/ b2 Z1 k0 c' H7 N& Z; A; e
I teased him all the time about being a nerd./ k$ P$ m* Q6 N9 y

1 }  _, k. M- M" t  VHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.
/ b9 K3 E6 ~/ S! t- g4 p4 g8 a. M2 X8 g2 H! k- d2 S  p( a# h; |
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak0 a4 Z1 T+ y; @# f! j

# D' F; d3 I, CGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
1 ]! R/ G8 ?; I. v/ B, G! A7 }1 [" c4 o4 a% s# J
He looked great.
- Y9 q& ?5 `4 `, m3 P9 g; P) r
; j. q: v  W" T: cHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
8 C6 z- V, t% {7 v! i4 u% q2 o' U7 B
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.  ?( ]$ A7 W. P, b/ m6 ~8 g6 X
8 Z- |) ]( n' I% ]9 L7 b& E
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
( B. @  ?" P% s7 t  I
6 r+ o/ j+ Y# i' m0 SBoy, sometimes I was jealous.! X. p; d6 w9 X! ?- q
+ [& r# x/ E/ B" v' f8 M
Today was one of those days.
; ~. M$ r  M! y: d: J6 L6 s: ^+ I" _- {0 I% \! F
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.2 g: K2 c# M7 M  u% `) m: s

4 L% S7 s9 h+ H5 I  e! g: wSo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
4 y  b1 v# g. w. o* K" G0 `9 C9 x3 c2 }3 s6 F
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
2 w/ [8 n& }/ i9 Q: S+ L# D  Z$ r9 [5 x7 u$ |5 _" r
"Thanks," he said.
5 @& t0 p, k- R, @- Q6 {# a# z) x+ p, I" Z4 [- H
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
( {" e4 b! g0 o) {7 H* l! c( Z& ?3 `6 q+ s
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.9 v- m! g: X% T% i

! E& W9 Z+ p, n9 S0 F+ y8 }0 y# iYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
- [5 l8 {' \6 g( L6 E5 n( _$ |* `+ i( o8 b1 V* N+ ^
I am here to tell all of you that being a0 r1 S+ K# p8 Y' z9 l& \8 R* b
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.0 o0 z% g, Z2 t+ ~5 u: H! H2 X

0 M# m/ D" g2 S* @- E% Q' uI am going to tell you a story."
" G) v7 `- [# s3 v3 L: _0 a" H/ N6 }2 O7 ^4 q7 e
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
. ]8 N  d. C% h5 }4 u! o3 v4 p- w! G* p$ [4 d  I, L
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
9 [. h0 s% _8 L# a: T
' a+ W  K6 r  C4 \' G& V6 G/ `) [He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
/ Y2 _) z) h* D7 q
+ v) R2 b: n- P6 z  f+ \He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
3 {6 l- L6 Y/ }) C: f5 O% X( i2 b2 k/ t7 ^5 ?. S' N* Y
"Thankfully, I was saved.
# v# l8 ^2 ?! M& U; |$ j# X* r9 _( G" a. d3 ~7 R8 t/ N+ r: }2 H
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."1 I5 Y0 R3 i5 C, U% ?# W

7 D# j) x4 J# O; ^$ @/ l- |( hI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment., H! b7 i8 j7 e8 o9 p* l

) e8 e# x& S: r& E' T, mI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.( s" i; I3 I9 Q# e- e: E5 J; P, I2 D8 ~
3 r/ T' T" X- r9 B
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.8 f: K* {: ~( _) R1 W9 C+ V6 x# o( I, ?" i
5 h% @, A( H/ u7 \; V; N; o* M' c/ \
Never underestimate the power of your actions.* x6 ]0 N8 z5 {7 ^9 a

5 u9 o3 s5 N: J3 v* ~3 CWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.& n8 o  B$ @8 m/ K; j
& m  [3 K  f2 F$ a. U/ Q& l5 L
For better or for worse.9 r0 F" |% s& @& L

$ z# I! `1 t2 e: }' F0 fGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.8 s9 C0 ^$ U# r( g3 z) y  L
! E9 z# L% I6 X2 D4 L' y9 b. c# V$ |
Look for God in others.
' T. ?8 B7 F6 {* U7 p$ ]% }5 T: U) ]
You now have two choices, you can:
8 }! H% k8 B5 ]/ O# J
2 e- _' f0 {! L1) Pass this on to your friends or5 v$ q1 l9 x9 u8 a& P
$ N: C2 T( Z* C2 {2 y
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
2 f/ h+ }6 `! V1 y0 E; O1 _! @0 y
As you can see, I took choice number 1.8 s$ i* U7 t4 Z/ n
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
3 T# ?' c+ i( e% e$ \
; O% n/ i+ b& b  H5 ~; t3 E# a8 H: v- [There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.0 K' ~; h: O- `* q4 }! ~- N

: ^: Z  p' j* h; _9 L$ v1 [6 qTomorrow is mystery.& ?6 q( l# _' |" g1 n0 n9 h; ?
' ?$ f9 v8 l" B) H0 @
Today is a gift., i; ^9 F8 O( b# a7 |

If it comes back to you, then you'll know you have a circle of friends.

Tomorrow is mystery.
