You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,7 d* E3 {! \! o9 R
9 J5 G* }+ u- _) p: J0 a/ P
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.# U6 v" {% |" r# A

/ n* ]- s# D8 q3 }9 [His name was Kyle.
2 J1 C3 U5 m3 P% M+ j: c( Q! a# c. G" z! ~( c$ L% F
It looked like he was carrying all of his
6 E  c" _- Q( @, RBooks.
/ {2 j0 a2 ?1 x) Y% W; d2 y6 z
5 w, ~7 B9 q! |% A* m# lI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
' q" g' j1 }7 h1 F0 ?: s+ H$ I% w- n
He must really be a nerd."
0 `4 `+ a0 m( W$ Z+ g
0 C5 K. F& A( |I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.' D, `# Z+ N9 Q4 y
3 O" ?) W4 r2 R; @; W/ O
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
4 _( I) D: C# V/ ~; _1 K  k/ h( y$ E! J9 ?, I4 N
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt./ c9 F$ v" J* g6 f0 B* f3 `4 X5 l6 S
8 l  v2 T# Y( K% ^! e
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.
: T: w( g; ?: C. a( _( j) `
' J2 b! L9 `& N- K- g  ~He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes! A5 b% i0 k) P( Q' ?
; e9 w) b# `+ E" A0 R: V
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye., I6 ]6 Z! N. Z; k. n( \! G5 f
5 Y( e. l( G; |) x1 L. ~
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
* I  a, ]# Y/ X# X2 g: a( X6 m/ _1 p3 @1 O5 V9 V
They really should get lives.
5 o' R! j# t  D% N; c  @5 G6 Z5 |. J7 e0 i- X
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"" V  M: \8 H2 ^' j* E3 ~

9 D1 O2 `9 L9 g- l, D! yThere was a big smile on his face.7 `0 q, ^& A  F! [% l  p8 |

3 x1 e! [# W0 k& J+ R* ]! fIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.0 T( K* G" j1 v0 W7 D

  ?' h+ V; s+ e, |4 X0 z7 dI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.2 i( T/ j" ^) F

9 R6 U$ o% E* j5 m! Y* q$ eAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
* e" H  k4 T0 Z3 b; H/ g, |- E  D, @- I  W- g
He said he had gone to private school before now.
$ c+ a9 T* v2 Z. I8 a0 i! C- c( N' C, O& M' U$ z& D
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.$ y) u& k/ C7 O4 ^$ B

. e# z  }1 W+ n3 V2 D- kWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books./ y, [# b/ ?! o  O: X0 s# ]0 n
4 D1 }, ]9 b! F4 c
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.3 z- U# T3 p! I8 s# C

: Y! @- I# A7 l/ i: ?I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.0 W2 F( o! n: c* s# v/ l& [( s

, [5 ^* t  D3 T5 B; p8 [  v% {He said yes.
! |$ y8 a4 t. f
. P  c2 @0 C3 ?We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.) D5 _0 O) r' {7 e* D3 h/ H6 q; V

0 R( Q+ }# C4 \4 l2 v* LMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
1 q; B# v0 a0 ~4 y( Y5 Y( s* r1 r5 L9 f% [( M1 x
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!+ G. ^) q% u7 U  p

! V2 N$ N. X/ r" p1 a7 M% b+ y" He just laughed and handed me half the books.; A/ r# p$ U/ O3 I- E

) T0 g4 b0 x5 I6 C3 z; E( m6 gOver the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
/ k3 A& o! @  P3 V% R& ]- b8 n! K. R9 @: A- {
When we were seniors, we began to think
; H2 A" h1 P8 _# z( p1 HAbout college.( T! X6 u' `5 B1 W# ]
2 }0 g  J1 T/ x, \; M
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I
1 A/ i5 e6 [. U4 f& l" |- [' ?+ nWas going to Duke.$ S2 S! T- Q1 z# P& l
& X, B4 t: _5 J3 M3 T
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
# R  D, ~  n( [2 [& J6 L( z1 P0 F( N; }% t( J% P1 U" B# \
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
2 @9 t3 s4 c2 B: m7 w- Y
7 g/ G6 ^) ^  h1 k- x4 K8 h0 kKyle was valedictorian of our class.
1 R& q  r( `. |' M3 H' r& j; c1 J+ C7 a  F
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.( G/ L3 p7 H" l; s( u" v

& {6 h2 v2 a3 B# z( cHe had to prepare a speech for graduation.
) C  c: K; z" F# o
, i( J% n6 _  wI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
, r8 u% _3 ?" |8 I( h0 Z
  q9 H3 [( |- v" ^5 ^' p8 iGraduation day, I saw Kyle.
, o+ D! L, O6 u7 I8 e
( I4 t; U* S7 j: X. ]: }$ d" KHe looked great.) }, A  O7 y; \# S

9 ^4 J+ [* }7 t! rHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.2 ~2 P, C4 j4 |  J/ q; }% K" o

- z/ e4 ?6 O7 mHe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.! o2 v+ O% n3 k2 h) J
8 r: s+ C' W5 Q0 k+ W; ]0 b( [, a
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
* z, M) V7 q9 n& f
$ {' i# E; \; CBoy, sometimes I was jealous.
6 Z3 N( k( F) Y8 R6 g6 W
5 f5 F1 H. k5 l' Z8 n) S' v. VToday was one of those days.9 L$ S7 N9 {, T
: w2 ?9 l' p4 h, Y5 h" S) y
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.8 l/ |1 [* Q  D8 Q8 j# O

, M7 R" p5 l$ C1 r% @# {: x. y; |So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"' ~: C) @; T6 R7 g
% J, R( f. A; H4 B- _) H6 t* Y
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.' @* d1 \) P% `3 v6 e9 e9 Z
4 C+ h( m6 @5 I- c6 `& _
"Thanks," he said., w: z- n5 y4 s4 r. T
& `0 v) G# J3 K# `9 G2 y: z
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began4 J+ g' N/ ]% @. X
' i' {" R$ g8 l" K3 `, F8 a' F2 k
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.' W7 C4 [- x* U5 W
8 T+ v$ A$ }, E
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...
6 L, C& a) p+ Z- X
1 B0 b( c; U. Y- i" F3 r  P: R  ^I am here to tell all of you that being a, L5 g. r2 z5 W5 y$ g/ `
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
, s8 X/ e. e3 `2 V: y; p+ X% r) R6 `6 p! I
I am going to tell you a story."
* o3 C+ \/ q1 d. o# D0 p7 G! m- m( x# `0 R9 X  P9 I
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.7 q! A6 t% F4 p
# @& s* Z- U% X0 n% p
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
& z* S( K1 ?7 T; \" l- J- ^  [$ n1 x, c& ~
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
& a8 q/ D& K( D! S1 X$ e; D. J" x% {. X- \
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
, L& M3 Y1 [! E% I0 u
/ H! R$ e' E5 p( N: U7 e! c"Thankfully, I was saved.
- ~( t. |+ S4 r% n
4 S% f/ {4 r) k5 T0 f7 }My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
2 e, o9 M4 `% Z- G) d' n4 j* K: l. g6 t( s# ]
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
( ?% @3 B6 O2 O9 e* g+ d
* o/ _0 S. ~+ }. XI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.' ^4 n8 p# _1 ^( }6 U' f. R, M
3 R+ F7 `, P' A3 @* P, s9 Q
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.
$ b5 P9 L! m/ ~  h/ v
+ h8 n- X  B5 Y, i( A0 Q  d6 v( XNever underestimate the power of your actions.
  L+ X; N+ }' ]5 y" ?
* h6 e6 j8 @" z4 ~1 E! oWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.4 o1 V5 P. R; I. H
" j# \! K8 v1 h" Q! a
For better or for worse.

: n. c, T2 K. a+ H/ A7 @7 P' WGod puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.- ^/ s0 W1 a! x6 J! S

Look for God in others.8 U$ e) D2 T3 @. |% q

8 C/ E& ?" e0 g5 e2 b, t  Y/ nYou now have two choices, you can:

, Q4 `1 G, W4 a( {8 R1) Pass this on to your friends or  f$ \& s: H0 d9 Z% ~- i

2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.) O" w2 }, a' z; F/ ~3 g

9 p0 h( P* ]  a7 n/ yAs you can see, I took choice number 1.+ G6 I% O! n0 w4 h! V( i
"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."
( l+ H1 r7 ]5 q/ R- z  c" D7 R! J& q! c3 R. _+ W0 i+ A3 O* N2 p
There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.  ]2 @9 I# Y. Q/ X" f1 @

! o3 Q( g7 d* S4 W# }  ~" k& `5 bTomorrow is mystery.
