You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,- O% F  P0 M! |7 M, v& A0 }

- f8 ?, v" d2 zI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
. o( D; ?' r1 \& e7 f' U# m% i- s1 L6 K. M5 l1 [/ g% a
His name was Kyle.7 N& {& H! j: ]4 F& ?

8 i! p) P# Y: p5 ?& B2 M1 C$ JIt looked like he was carrying all of his
+ A2 K! [2 K) q6 d% z' VBooks.# V, D, G5 K1 I1 y

6 P. y/ U8 Z9 i! O, Q7 l+ |0 mI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
- }7 `) @" ^1 k5 n, I6 i' m: t" A2 W5 ]: o$ j( R( ]/ i. P, T/ M# u
He must really be a nerd."
) e: p8 d3 r) i3 ?; ]; B3 @! x# V' W3 f
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.' p+ b& n  `! B: |# j' s) b: m2 \
& i! }/ M) N4 `, h7 j' y
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.- j. ^5 {) H  r! @, h9 H

. L+ C1 K2 U2 |: l* c" ~8 E. ?! a5 AThey ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.5 ?; B3 A1 m) V3 m: Z; }

$ r1 L+ p1 v9 M6 YHis glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.+ ?* y+ V1 s  P4 j1 S. i

0 ?; t9 M' f! G) r! b' m- QHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes# F  V' y/ G, y$ Z5 e9 J! i9 d
) {' Q/ y' _, X% E2 H  M! n3 s
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.+ H9 e; z- l9 n+ y" u* @

$ q5 Z  h1 h' Y8 V; \* jAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.1 A# {/ ]5 L4 n" k5 G: y

- v2 e- D. a5 p6 c9 oThey really should get lives.9 Q4 P* A# o3 o; U; V' y! V6 G. T
) v! l. j9 \3 C. g2 z4 \
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"  |" S- x: |7 |1 u% M6 g

4 S9 g  D' N; i# @There was a big smile on his face.
5 B8 i& C% A, Q
. G4 g' ?# w. x- ?) ~  qIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
8 [" o% g' S  S* }+ `% n! S* w9 i- w
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
' n/ t" Y8 Y+ a
6 ?! H, s) @2 [5 n5 ]As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
5 f! A* P/ L" a
0 h7 Z3 Z% y3 ?" q8 QHe said he had gone to private school before now.
+ {2 Z) m, l/ g: v& N8 C3 }; n! ]4 u7 Z* n  V
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
7 ~" t$ u% l8 _9 u/ H4 u4 v# A/ Q
( T% H: a" Q4 S$ iWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
' l% t* d2 M/ |: l4 D6 ?7 Y4 B& X. @, }; F' h9 ~* X
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.# U, i, k1 g5 I! {8 ?
! ^7 q. h6 [) P# r
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.
1 g0 {9 Q: r# h; k2 j
' N9 ]  l$ I- M4 ~) c+ BHe said yes.7 O" O8 A! M( F. \
# G( m. f0 M% h9 r
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.5 u3 L9 Q& [6 y: d* }2 V1 ]1 B" x

" R. @5 I, a4 k  `' b1 gMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.! G7 q: j$ Q, F
1 `5 F& D  f0 i8 O0 j3 A
I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!" j$ x2 j3 e2 ^) \" g! W: w: ~

' }; ^/ p) ]7 u; Y/ s7 ^" He just laughed and handed me half the books.: e, V$ E- j. V* J6 B7 g: Z
& b+ \" ?0 h) K+ f( F
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.3 M) s9 n2 A  `$ j0 A# l
. Q+ ^4 y& T4 _2 }0 D/ @) q
When we were seniors, we began to think
* ^# O8 A% K; F: E8 G9 oAbout college.+ O' ?$ B9 R) B+ L  T3 `# A4 e9 |
( ]/ e7 `3 h; p! w
Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I, i$ K: E! ]) P
Was going to Duke.
1 Z4 q. U1 d, f0 w' H( o* }* s& ?3 `; @( Z' g$ |
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.( I; G2 P6 M3 W) A) h! N' e
  N7 N1 K. ?+ \
He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.+ P5 n! _' h8 x  E3 T

3 y. ?6 g- U0 l: K3 GKyle was valedictorian of our class.
0 \6 ]+ |5 B7 ]  ]  F7 A. m
# O1 g$ F8 Y) E3 C3 A  ]9 V4 c* iI teased him all the time about being a nerd.
+ l" U5 _, q8 u5 M6 q6 |; k( l* A: N# w
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.
4 ^; n4 e5 A( U9 m0 y" ~7 C3 f$ |$ d2 s
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak0 G5 Y4 R: x0 C4 f8 ^4 x; O4 U
% [% ^& n) j. w5 i( ]& F
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.
3 h5 f+ F/ |( f1 u, x3 }
7 F9 O, H2 H1 K& G4 `% `0 QHe looked great.
; Y* P0 ]: u* J6 {8 H
% }7 l+ k4 T8 H2 r! U3 EHe was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.3 a9 i% V/ M. u6 ~) k
9 r, o, }# t. G6 q$ H# B: v1 b$ x
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.. \  v9 A0 }' U9 k
; D" z; D' c7 a+ T
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.. ]1 q* j% z' T& [1 t

' ?6 \; U, O7 j1 I( TBoy, sometimes I was jealous.
0 ?* t, P& _7 R! Q1 v' ~/ l4 E2 {- T& s% o0 \/ B- W" _0 |
Today was one of those days.9 G0 q7 s8 `  C

8 u. E5 G+ o6 R" d4 [& [: p( W  QI could see that he was nervous about his speech.
7 J* U8 ]; A7 p6 w( p: U1 f3 Z8 a6 D# r3 T! G
So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
7 J9 i. c* A% |2 v5 e" P7 L7 o5 d$ a0 \4 n9 B& s: x, }7 z
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.3 L( e; {6 r4 h" c! z4 ?* G9 O

$ F" G+ ?8 a% U% p"Thanks," he said.& P& {% O# {+ d6 |% C/ F1 ^
9 l7 u8 a5 J1 b* T9 X+ g
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
. G  ]1 v* z; f; z% I' x3 y- B  ^# M, {& u/ W& j2 `$ i. Y  _
"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.9 M6 Z6 y% r; f% Q/ A( L

/ s9 }7 ^. s1 M: \# W6 K* u" \Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...7 M6 [" ?! M: ~9 c4 V

- }8 p$ ?7 X8 P- I2 R) KI am here to tell all of you that being a+ m" m1 B/ `3 t. L
Friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
$ F# R: V1 d5 B5 z/ w5 V/ }
! k4 Q( M7 _4 q% A% k/ O' w( `) F/ cI am going to tell you a story."
; [- ]3 }  z* R, @
/ z9 D9 d) x; \7 `& u# G0 PI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.
3 A; f/ T( o0 L& C* h
* S4 U2 A3 j1 g6 w* s) W4 vHe had planned to kill himself over the weekend., J5 q- J6 f, _4 S  e% m; k. c1 _

$ C- L) P) p) l( wHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
' y/ i7 c9 Y6 G8 r2 X5 a/ V% I0 e% u& ^0 }- A  {* N
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
; e& M# L2 n0 E5 _6 ~3 f8 `/ k4 e
% P& y, S4 w, G"Thankfully, I was saved., A) E' C6 k" o- e+ J) w* g* m$ }

9 N+ q( {2 z# W6 x% i8 ]My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
" d0 C$ Y/ b* Q5 {! n
4 m! y6 P: O( `. H% ]  s1 R! OI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
3 o3 h3 n# l& F1 x6 H0 S0 k) s- y' ^* s1 T; k6 K; |
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
, s& M4 A" _' z9 g- X+ y. \3 u0 A+ h  l' i4 }7 N
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.! q0 {) w6 e4 C( {1 B" M

$ i! P5 i; P) ^, p0 c) FNever underestimate the power of your actions.
2 w( d, J. }/ {9 d% J* U9 u
. {! ^, t0 ^: w9 HWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.9 x# [. i# V9 w+ Y9 o9 V; [

% s' x7 {9 l. ?' m# g# |8 qFor better or for worse.9 g' S! l6 e3 P& h! {( o" g
$ A* C; R3 p# x* s4 K1 E; o
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.
3 ]8 @3 X# R1 z0 A1 ]& L
9 B& X4 R3 L! Y! d8 _5 oLook for God in others.
) D* F) L) ^- P# j' L8 k( R& f( ?/ w; G4 r- w: l
You now have two choices, you can:
  o4 R# m& J, ]; l) D0 M8 x6 N* o+ d, S' [8 X! j- l
1) Pass this on to your friends or
+ g. M4 K# {, B& B) _' i7 b( {; J) o1 \, K0 k# |0 I' G1 z
2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.
: q: }+ ]2 Z) b* {
9 Q* P  s4 F* v! TAs you can see, I took choice number 1.5 e) ]! }! j" P- \

+ U* J9 N- t% AThere is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.3 D; t" E) n6 Y0 P/ K' u- z

Tomorrow is mystery.$ b, [7 C- a3 _9 r+ A

; l$ u0 Y# u3 t+ ^7 oToday is a gift.
