Our government recognizes that the Internet and digital technologies are
9 l9 E- ]- _% p3 d& Q- A- i5 lan increasingly important part of everyday life—including driving
! r5 o+ X5 v% E e) Linnovation, commerce and social interaction. As the government develops7 G1 |9 L3 p6 L2 p: u7 _9 z
Canada’s first comprehensive Digital Economy Strategy, we need to look
6 Q' W( i' u3 f7 w' V% a( l1 hcarefully at how issues like UBB affect the big picture. We will be$ ~% \8 U- ?* B, `8 r+ x1 N) c! w
guided by our long-standing policies of encouraging competition and
6 K0 Z# G; Y9 g, K" R/ v. `investment, increasing consumer choice, minimizing regulation and allowing; q- j' w' N3 ?/ _1 l& s
market forces to prevail. % w( d6 E% c+ R4 f/ Z: d3 ?; R1 V
% S0 l- y1 v0 L6 r [6 C6 D2 K
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has
& N$ e* d0 d) {! X2 E: p, uchosen to examine these concerns that the government shares with a large8 Q) `" I# u$ N5 _# E: }& J
number of Canadians. Details of the CRTC consultation are available at

0 U6 T# d) i& D6 s* xWhen the CRTC reaches a final decision following its consultations, the$ p: f& {& e4 a( L) Z% t
government will carefully assess the CRTC position to ensure that it is in2 m. c3 E0 Y# i5 o5 R. X) @
line with the best interests of Canadian consumers and encourages6 l6 x: X( _ E; T
competition among internet service providers. I will be recommending that( j/ g* c* c8 X% G4 ~
any decision counter to these foundational principles be reversed.4 H0 P& H8 g2 `+ k' W9 H
