2 k' I2 u: K- K; f' y$ }0 \  K- |5 r19. The big clock which used to strike the hours day and night was damaged many years ago and has been silent ever since.- Z8 E$ @4 }! D$ L

20. One night, however, our vicar woke up with a start: the clock was striking the hours!

21. Looking at his watch, he saw that it was one o'clock, but the bell struck thirteen times before it stopped.

22. Armed with a torch, the vicar went up into the clock tower to see what was going on.4 |# }9 E+ J( l

23. In the torchlight, he caught sight of a figure whom he immediately recognized as Bill Wilkins, our local grocer.- ]3 K8 O* h; `. v& Y/ r) l
        借着电筒光。他看见一个人,马上认出那是本地杂货店主经比尔.威尔金斯。
$ l2 U3 P* O7 W' k5 G/ W24. 'Whatever are you doing up here Bill?' asked the vicar in surprise.

25. 'I'm trying to repair the bell,' answered Bill.

27. You see, I was hoping to give you a surprise.

28. 'You certainly did give me a surprise!' said the vicar.

29. You've probably woken up everyone in the village as well.7 E3 A# r$ F3 _0 s5 n7 |

30. Still, I'm glad the bell is working again.$ }2 X8 w6 M0 k7 s$ c

9 b# L/ C; c* T3 g- F31. That's the trouble, vicar,' answered Bill.

32. It's working all right, but I'm afraid that at one o'clock it will strike thirteen times and there's nothing I can do about it.$ d: L) S( D" f7 G. Z

33. We'll get used to that, Bill,' said the vicar.

34. Thirteen is not as good as one, but it's better than nothing.* H6 m) V+ z) L& r5 E( M# L
        “13下是不如1下好,但总比1下也不敲强。
6 W# G4 d3 J1 `3 E35. Now let's go downstairs and have a cup of tea.
7 Q: I# v& @- `        来,咱们下楼去喝杯茶吧。”
