 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 4 P; ^/ a8 }! I1 a4 g2 v+ B
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
0 M7 g$ U( y* i. {; |" t( }in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October 0 d* C' k3 n2 W
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
" N: d* D* T) P: Z V6 m9 Ctheir church, it was very run down and needed
4 d) k' Z4 F/ Y' `; I& _" smuch work. They set a goal to have everything
2 c0 Z/ e: k' `# D$ a0 {2 Y; Jdone in time to have their first service
. ~) j7 \) _" K S7 D( W2 e% }on Christmas Eve. ; h' o0 _) x( ?
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
7 o1 u' S' o5 H/ b8 G5 c0 bpainting, etc, and on December 18 . L' u1 Y6 i% V
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
7 Y2 d4 e4 f5 ~ }( kO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
8 i/ g7 W3 C7 V4 @/ U2 Z' d( krainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
) ~+ r& H- B0 q/ N; F& j O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church., u) n9 b5 A2 v' g. @8 q! s
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
$ L' n: y i7 E2 v4 [% pleaked, causing a large area of plaster about 2 g, ]& a$ N6 N5 y9 F3 `* P6 m2 @
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
1 L- h+ y; V' e6 w& Bof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, ' G- a+ e, J0 M( `4 u' p
beginning about head high. $ b" M6 w, f3 A) c
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
, }& c* G) {! R* k G& _; [# _and not knowing what else to do but postpone 0 w, k1 k ^7 l1 O6 B* O
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
+ Q6 b9 E, Z+ f: Y' iOn the way he noticed that a local business was " `0 i7 X! d n( |5 N8 F8 P
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
! v6 \1 d3 I1 w( lstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
6 L7 A0 r; E' X3 uhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth 1 |) m0 @+ s: d7 C) H5 u
with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
' X3 k; R) ]4 L8 _# iembroidered right in the center. It was just " ]3 X6 g' l" `, `" w, f" o9 c
/ _6 ^7 c& A: t2 n
/ \" f; e; R" f; Y& z4 M : k h C& m" t

- B% S0 F. E& \4 s' b% m
b; `7 L, G8 g! a2 V+ Xthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
7 y+ v* F( ~8 c+ C- u3 X$ m2 F, xB y this time it had started to snow. An older
* R8 _& f& a0 C, Vwoman running from the opposite direction was 1 D6 w! U( c T4 v6 o2 y
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor ( q) C( {( B2 _; L4 `
invited her to wait in the warm church for
; ~# H+ y9 w2 [ i- I& J6 Tthe next bus 45 minutes later. ( d/ M) g* r- j& F0 |8 y k
: U0 l9 h+ Q6 ]0 p: fShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor j$ @% `0 w2 ? {' k5 v0 t6 ~
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put ' B: U j5 S5 c6 ^. s
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor ! \% v. c6 j. _
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. ; O F2 Q. K; e# b! ~4 u
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center2 Q+ e0 `6 v1 ~0 o6 P: w
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"6 R7 F k3 ]( `( x
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
1 T6 E9 _) @ u; g1 nThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
+ O$ R: {) X& J% X5 Athe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into) d. P/ t" a5 {3 v2 G! X; d* o1 d. g
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
4 l& c& |" x; e9 j0 a. Y% R' h# ymade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
, |( l0 f# S- f2 ?' \T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor B$ p/ _- R, a8 a! ~
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
0 j6 X9 g9 N$ h2 s# o5 swoman explained that before the war she and
7 l) \& l% I4 z: y7 q3 N* t. Z: N Rher husband were well-to-do people in Austria . 6 x2 \* T/ u) J# j4 ^% I
, s, Q! j2 `2 I6 o& \& W @5 e
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. ! U. p I% I" E1 R: ^
Her husband was going to follow her the next week. + w2 Z( r5 _; b9 T1 A
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 8 V8 C& K% l$ U# D3 u
husband or her home again.
: o3 h2 [( s! k0 s% eT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
# L- X2 Q) m& M/ J7 M3 C3 hbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
9 V. i8 x4 D8 Q# kThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
8 T1 G$ Y* R: u! J- hwas the least he could do. She lived on the other# Q9 ~% w( K9 Z
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn % p! H' S: J/ z% C' t
for the day for a housecleaning job.
5 j; d z- B- j! }W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
+ m$ c9 C% [) j5 U, F+ _9 t1 c3 ]Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
* } a7 \; S& v& Aspirit were great. At the end of the service, the $ t' M0 u( D* o$ @/ E+ F
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 9 M% A# J8 H! V
and many said that they would return..
' q5 R) D1 x- G1 p2 _) EOne older man, whom the pastor recognized - B1 u9 o' }& I. \0 t; K) I
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
" l7 ^& @: f5 y A; S; gpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
+ p- x: o6 V& m( @8 a1 xwasn't leaving. # h. _! t% i9 T. c' A- p3 _ j5 M. z
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
* ]. d+ s2 M/ s+ A$ p: V- Xthe front wall because it was identical to one
: N2 @; C6 e6 h5 E0 J# y( cthat his wife had made years ago when
$ [: [0 v) s# L- d8 y+ n8 p5 G+ \they lived in Austria before the war and how
' ~: g6 ]( Q4 n5 qcould there be two tablecloths so much alike? , A0 Z+ T/ M0 g$ `
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
/ ?4 A" s7 N: W, b8 xforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was H9 I; u' W# b; \/ o
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
1 Z+ M/ u0 G8 q# t# p) ^, v3 J7 cput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home5 P7 ]/ H$ E9 M" V5 U/ c o
again all the 35 years between.
) |: M- u% ~* E, RT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to 5 V# M _! O, n) z( k$ w& C
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten / u1 o5 B! r- e* v- j
Island and to the same house where the pastor * `2 C! B& x7 u. ?8 @8 V
had taken the woman three days earlier.
! y; x3 f# L8 y! V2 K# sHe helped the man climb the three flights of% y5 p5 \- f; } S: k( F
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on5 O" o: T. @' v1 ?! }( _3 [
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
! N' Q' B% G# s+ {9 N3 O6 I' V/ Oreunion he could ever imagine.
