+ _& o( R/ K8 `. r& a+ [ The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 6 s4 Y. u, h2 B0 Q! W
to their first ministry, to reopen a church 8 n: l5 m+ G! {, \+ l
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October * D5 K: _/ T r9 ?5 F$ K) y* h, J
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
! _& _7 X9 V/ a, P. X1 qtheir church, it was very run down and needed 9 L2 G# s. T# E& v' U* ~
much work. They set a goal to have everything G O( k/ w6 R( l* ]' `, P
done in time to have their first service
# q% ^" n8 Z y" bon Christmas Eve.
. G! b& Q" t! j$ G0 C1 _3 pT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
7 v! z+ A$ e+ z ^- {* b7 ` [painting, etc, and on December 18 - k) b- I( M! p3 E
were ahead of schedule and just about finished. , m3 a( u) T; [; X
O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving " }& g m A, u" k" Z9 A/ O
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. : n r- `4 t& h% @: v9 @& [
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.; w) z9 w# `- R, h4 U
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had8 R* Z7 E3 D @6 C9 D5 W _- T
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
9 U% n1 b0 j; s9 G4 r1 z* `20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
7 z3 K: G: c, x9 P5 j; k9 a$ Gof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
# X* L. Q2 I( @8 z d, z& Jbeginning about head high.
, a% o( X/ E: e6 eT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
5 Q% X6 H# K* b7 r% n0 `and not knowing what else to do but postpone ! Q3 R9 c- d) w/ o2 e; D
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. ) ^1 J( |% r2 x
On the way he noticed that a local business was , I+ l! w9 \( _2 c0 u! I% w2 l
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he 2 W7 |! D2 o* e5 D. Q$ P
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, & P& H- W* W$ f
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
8 y! H: ^7 s( o3 A4 f6 }: {5 Lwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
) q8 d& w: D' p$ pembroidered right in the center. It was just
! I! T4 O9 Q2 W: C% U
- }2 e+ v8 F; W) F3 h6 J E Q0 Q4 N8 E5 U/ j* o

4 O1 j+ N8 J0 ]4 ~the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
2 B& j8 Q& Y" W( U2 d" F; o- s+ E; AB y this time it had started to snow. An older . V" t( x- M$ O5 v
woman running from the opposite direction was ' u# s& w3 q ^) x
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor 6 @/ M. J/ j$ q, O0 V
invited her to wait in the warm church for 5 f% u, e- ~% ^# m$ n
the next bus 45 minutes later.

4 B0 q M* ?9 _5 `+ Z% vShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
9 ^0 }, z) u1 Pwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put 9 A+ J% p T4 g5 p* e z
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor ) e$ A. }: } Y8 a& w+ T( h
could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
! _& s2 P) |& y4 H. NT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
D. i4 s3 c" ^4 j+ N. [aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
3 `# W. R1 [& vshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" $ I0 e# ?8 | F- o/ ]: {
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check* s7 u2 Z6 i- n2 B2 X' B
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
Y; k0 M% _; h2 ^it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
6 A. V4 Z. P3 }2 A% Kmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . . Y& H$ S" P# F. {
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor - a5 O& K9 [; E! a1 o. p: N
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
2 m$ G) j, w. b4 k% Z3 owoman explained that before the war she and 2 i) h4 f0 u N; L! g% C/ B; t. a G, k
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . J; G! @4 {5 O& L, V' Y" N
/ q, A0 D5 W) E. \When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
& S5 M- V6 I1 E uHer husband was going to follow her the next week. 9 z" N; z" l: J$ Z2 z4 s
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her ; }& Q" @7 q: ]+ e2 k0 x
husband or her home again. " @# Z5 W3 s+ e
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
" Z) P; r: D2 w6 X# Sbut she made the pastor keep it for the church.
$ n5 y; c) A, Y2 TThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That+ z R4 ^0 H5 d e" O
was the least he could do. She lived on the other& y1 f* G) e" i& P6 g
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
+ F" c( X" P7 h) V7 Pfor the day for a housecleaning job.$ z0 B }# [. q- ~0 C- t0 b
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 9 d5 w* ~/ a }2 b3 o! S
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the 9 j9 i* k ^8 _- R; r
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
! H1 P/ s6 t9 \! Opastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door & T! e, n; w' Y9 C/ S7 c, D- }
and many said that they would return..
! c2 |, A! K# ^One older man, whom the pastor recognized
6 z# J, V( J7 J0 l6 ~from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the 6 d v* A1 X3 X. E- L7 v" S; p& i
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
8 x$ I, b1 d4 n$ W mwasn't leaving.
3 v( m4 [" E+ WThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
6 @8 g( w0 i4 rthe front wall because it was identical to one
! B1 ]; V$ s! S- P$ `that his wife had made years ago when % D/ k2 a9 B& a3 _. @# G4 R
they lived in Austria before the war and how
, X' y: U/ F6 W' Q# Ecould there be two tablecloths so much alike? / h1 B8 m7 Q+ ^5 T. f/ C( \! ` [
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 4 E8 X7 r2 f) k0 e1 H5 Q9 z. ^! N
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was 6 Y) y; |! b6 t- t! P3 g7 K
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
* N6 c) N) P% r! Rput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home
( e! f0 Z+ J1 f6 Oagain all the 35 years between. V& K0 k) Q5 I9 F
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to ) q+ J* t1 W2 |9 ?& Y- k
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
( {% x% b6 Y1 m# c, O8 `/ _1 pIsland and to the same house where the pastor 1 `8 K% S) c/ M2 c: u+ a0 D
had taken the woman three days earlier. 7 o$ ?/ T% c9 k8 Q) ~
He helped the man climb the three flights of2 q) g6 h! c* I& M
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
1 g' s* [3 P0 L9 |# s2 ethe door and he saw the greatest Christmas 6 Y& C! z( |# O9 N0 i
reunion he could ever imagine.

cares we know He will see us through.

! \; |2 O/ S! C7 K- u) U; C: edifficult at best, just remember I'm here # {! S) n% h: {% ]4 q( `" K
