Edmonton's population grows by 30,000$ }1 R- R' ~- b7 G) q3 m- V6 P/ i

/ b# b0 n( g& t- ?5 T% g$ S: L0 e1 tEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning., R+ s. c) z# P% d; W; d
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
5 d2 h9 B: q% u5 x5 {0 ]7 \The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.6 D' [8 z" L: p
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.
, P0 f- H* m$ P' p"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
, P8 \: ?# c" v( B" C# x& s* D( SEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
+ h5 u9 C' k0 ~" z6 `! mThis year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
