Figures from the quarterly fiscal update show a six percent drop sucking away $50 million dollars from initial budget projections.

Angeline Webb, a Cancer Control Analyst for the Canadian Cancer Society, says "it appears that the Tobacco Reduction Act is having the desired effect."

- S% g$ c8 L( \- CMeanwhile the final phase of the Act goes into effect on January 1st.

That's when smokers will no longer be able to purchase their fix at post-secondary institutions along with businesses containing a pharmacy, and that includes supermarkets.

, [+ ]% \& X4 P/ M( s/ c# o8 BBut the Campaign for a Smoke-Free Alberta is still calling for a two-dollar per pack tax increase to make smoking even less affordable.

It points to a recent Health Canada survey which found 20 per cent of Alberta teens smoke, compared with 15 per cent across Canada.
