EDMONTON - Prices for new homes in Edmonton fell 5.3 per cent in July compared to the same month last year, marking the biggest year-over-year drop in 23 years, said Statistics Canada today.

Calgary saw a 0.3 per cent slide compared to July of last year.

& v& n& c4 d# ZEven heated Saskatoon posted a slower annual increase of 13.1 per cent, "further confirmation of a trend of deceleration in this city. Many builders reported increased prices as a result of higher material and labour costs," the agency said.4 u0 U( S: Z6 T2 z) W9 H0 r' P
( a* K0 q* T9 P) v0 tThe fastest pace was in Regina, which saw a year-over-year price increase of 29.6 per cent, down from its record rise of 34 per cent in April.0 j/ S7 S5 g# P4 C

As the market continued to cool in Western Canada, prices for new homes rose nationally at a slower pace in July for the sixth consecutive month./ X; X, a% H& x' j* J# O4 S
! ?3 y; T' K# e; WPrices were up 2.7 per cent in July from a year earlier, down from June's annual pace of 3.5 per cent. On a monthly basis, prices edged up 0.1 per cent between June and July.
