Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 0 X- p- Y& Y2 {: Q

3 p4 E2 a: H0 U8 b8 dYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 7 F* m# h6 Z6 _- k! {
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
4 c7 h. ^# ~' y" h. Z0 cnews to report from that meeting., B" `: d% R Z: x j4 {# G
0 D2 a; P2 J4 W; R" j( pFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current * _, T# w5 _4 ?2 G
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
& G6 w7 l. Q. u: A: ^- Sdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international 9 j2 x; Q: q+ T, ~* I) U* H
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base ! i& P: C/ ~- a6 p. S
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
0 B; P$ S' x% ?Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 3 J2 q! ~+ H5 w* y2 G
the differential for international graduate students.

/ q% R+ H: l7 M9 C# _' n" L' [* tNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
% P+ V; y4 ^# m V% r2 Pincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to - R( f, s; _8 d6 u1 h) B
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students # S' ~2 C, E5 V$ q9 R- M- `* y$ o7 r
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 4 G) `; c; Q% `+ K4 W2 Z2 M8 B/ S5 Q6 L
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in & j7 H* M* q# ?) [) _/ P+ ^
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected ' Y! U F- z5 F9 I, ?, w. b+ W i
increases once they are here.* a& C5 V: D3 t; t4 G: i
( c8 _: @ C% W! B: `6 nThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the

have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
