/ p% Z, C) t4 S4 j, Z1 MGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad : U' d5 Q) t6 x, u' {% Q
news to report from that meeting., v. P; Z; S l: w5 Z$ \) R
/ o, W/ Z* z$ l3 x1 k6 \First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current ! m* P6 c/ g" N% q4 t
undergraduate international students from the increase to the 6 H7 ~4 n" _. i6 k( @, t
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international ' [0 E7 o: q8 G$ O" Y; G
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base + Z5 j; g' `- o U% \" m$ E
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 2 @0 F$ Q) [6 C' Z" f( T9 c: I2 m) u* R
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
r h2 O7 P0 g( M. Q) V; [2 fthe differential for international graduate students.

4 m, H( {0 z# V1 h& z4 NNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
+ l! K, V! X3 p pincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 0 o5 j7 Z" p# I; A+ |7 p
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 7 M) A; M. W/ B& G: K$ `
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
$ `! `7 C) U1 P( T, ]0 }5 Q7 Hleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
3 V& L) B$ W! q4 Gtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
: `; Q! J2 l1 n0 l. ~increases once they are here.0 [6 Q! P3 |4 \0 ~* {
6 L: B- T' F$ S! }6 oThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
0 \/ ]- E- h. k$ Dinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
+ T2 i; \; _' |would like to say thank you to all of the international students that ! Y) ^5 a! S8 x1 {2 p4 o, T
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
