9 d) i' r1 _, R8 S y; `+ c( ~Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties $ M7 h- y; P1 v4 Z( I
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad " U2 J3 T& ` l$ o ?3 r% m# O
news to report from that meeting.
) R5 ]* O( G4 H" ?
8 O; y) H+ g( eFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
5 U0 |& {' k7 r2 q+ H5 Eundergraduate international students from the increase to the
$ G6 a& n5 t& F! P$ rdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international ; U2 D$ Y$ t; t; v8 {" @; d& C
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
8 l" V2 g2 `. g: }+ H7 ltuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). 0 l# ~% P: ~2 v6 k- N9 \
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
, M% d* h# P/ `. S; P5 H/ W7 Sthe differential for international graduate students." E2 A( i' R3 l u/ h$ Y
8 K' o, x: E# e; m8 }9 yNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
9 B% @/ M, E; A, S) V3 E9 }6 Oincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
0 {7 G+ q3 x! |220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students 9 M' K3 y! u4 X Y
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
$ n# a( \# |6 Q& F Nleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in _& x! A$ k" p
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
5 T% m% n$ ^, z7 ~9 S; ?& Rincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
2 A0 W" |% x) t1 N' Qinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
7 C/ C5 }* g+ n. T- e/ Qwould like to say thank you to all of the international students that
% y2 R' X% Y% `# {( f* b0 lhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
& F* T O2 a. ?' y; t+ T. [( [6 Tincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your 6 v# X! c& M/ ]/ r) v. r
