Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties - a( n+ Q2 x4 @9 Y% C6 k- k. s
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad + k4 G+ e) e$ M4 O1 ^. J4 L
news to report from that meeting.
5 k+ B% c d9 }4 t1 Y/ K5 G# S0 K8 c/ w- v i/ ~; t
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 8 e9 m" ~- o: `' ~$ ~" m
undergraduate international students from the increase to the + Z0 E* B8 X) T0 G. p
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
3 G1 F4 O# \: ~ v) I& a/ u8 t9 Q9 |students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
2 g2 Z: q+ n. Ntuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
; H+ Z. e8 I- M& JAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase P+ ^- h8 C7 g
the differential for international graduate students.
, U+ M1 P$ q# O$ I, P
4 C( }2 T+ w1 D# Z! o' s9 {+ YNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an 0 I1 ?# q H. s; K J' S8 K
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
' x: K6 b/ S j j1 z1 O220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students - i7 M- P3 x8 Q$ H
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At $ ^; V$ @% K2 t2 Z
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in & \! \& x9 i; R' B5 N0 ]: H
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
9 [6 P& D$ o0 n7 Q' [increases once they are here.

2 Z; q# T k3 c8 H- Q( f# sThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the / F0 u$ S4 f2 E+ n7 C
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I ) X4 G' I0 G- l( B$ E0 D

& G, v' x. W6 K; Ihave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
