Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. 1 e% g" o# w8 U3 e/ ~

) \4 v, \9 u: B% ?! P5 uYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
0 W3 r& U \$ x0 _( rCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
( Y$ g9 m- u) ~% X- snews to report from that meeting.+ T! U# C# P: V! t1 \9 d% B
1 ]: n, r* D4 ~1 g4 [" a/ A0 l- u
First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current Q8 a" @0 W, }. }3 t1 D7 E+ o6 v+ @+ w
undergraduate international students from the increase to the 4 y; H- A0 l6 _& {+ ]/ ~" j
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
% Y" h2 t5 ?, s# {students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
" s% ^0 \- c, }0 ptuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
3 r6 E. x+ ], k, g; E! x5 u3 qAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
2 Q& Q# P& j9 z, A& v+ a! q8 Nthe differential for international graduate students.5 J2 u4 R, ?: Z5 W
% ]' T; b2 {8 X5 ~! |! [7 p
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an 8 ]) Z% {. ^3 x
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
# c; i2 N0 o1 d+ A220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students : B) Q7 h0 Y+ k+ ]; Y
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 0 i$ ?. m5 M/ N/ _' u
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
( [! G+ y6 X3 ^. \tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected 3 r- }4 y0 H& B; i
increases once they are here., ?* Z0 }1 N* v* B) }

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
5 r# t/ D7 U5 c# e% |international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I 4 l/ y( P: d) I3 \4 k& w7 {
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that . X2 d; O5 y0 `* v1 u- [3 f
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 1 Y+ V7 H- {1 U* G0 s4 l/ B
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your 0 m& o; k: T2 q" u; L
help. Thank you.
