Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
& p- u. W. R) b2 h( rCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
% V! W0 M: L$ _: }news to report from that meeting.

: c& H' P4 \7 V! g! E& w6 {4 j& {First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
8 L. H5 n% |, V6 Uundergraduate international students from the increase to the . I; l0 Q/ e( Z7 ^
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
3 p+ r0 Y r% X) x- o7 o. a: W, tstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
) Y2 r7 O8 @" A1 Z9 W+ Q f7 s6 _tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
5 h4 M9 @/ j* uAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
! n v1 D; V9 T/ x9 jthe differential for international graduate students.
; C7 ~- [/ {* Z8 a$ k m- H- P& k7 I8 ]( @8 H6 e6 o% J+ {
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an ' S! u% {- n1 k7 I1 |' B' i* \. {
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to ; I- X% W# z& Z. R8 W
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
% c- I- z3 P! i4 [; d ]) _will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
# b/ Z8 C4 E9 |5 C: ~% I: Mleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
, u: }1 r1 k7 Y* {" Q/ z1 |6 Ktuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
" N2 V- ?* @, P4 C8 r. @- I0 Uincreases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
& J! f; S, a3 s; iinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this O6 @8 b S! I* v5 r1 c6 `* I1 R, _& w
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
