Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. , g C' ? d- [. M

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
( U) o; E7 h" q& P4 Y. DCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
7 ~, x5 I; P; W7 @news to report from that meeting. \ p7 F4 E$ j7 K4 u- t6 k
' M# c/ u k2 EFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current 2 ?, U' l, }6 C9 O5 w2 S
undergraduate international students from the increase to the ~' B' s! h4 m7 j8 L* C+ d
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
- G& Y2 \- _2 D, B' }students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
1 g5 [8 B9 v: [; C- |0 e) Rtuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). # ~# b- a) l, m3 A3 j1 `: I
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase $ l/ @, @4 y! G
the differential for international graduate students.

4 K2 }3 a9 E( c3 ]Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
" x$ V3 I2 ^* R! Y2 O8 x! F6 Eincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
8 Y' r" {! u+ N) I220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
3 c2 Y9 P) @7 _4 w4 s& W- bwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
4 m0 \# g. g: N/ g( M7 ^least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
! g* l( H+ K3 \4 _. K0 e( {tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected " d2 A4 b) h4 z: }
increases once they are here.- p% \8 r4 r+ M
" E1 O* j' c1 j: v% C5 v; oThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 0 E d l7 |: B2 \) D/ I8 c+ j
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 7 p/ h1 O, F- Z' e; k
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
