Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
$ J8 O: V* A4 F* y2 ?Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad " D' a) u. G, t q N9 `! m& q
news to report from that meeting.
9 @) p7 u6 e# I+ ^+ a4 M( B, c* k
( [) Y* q v! f8 {+ lFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current . f$ P$ Y- N9 O8 k |. I. ~, M
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
& F3 V8 o, a2 W' Z1 odifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international 8 `% i: s, E3 r3 I l; {# m7 y
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
& m0 n" i8 |! F* Ctuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). + ]5 y+ H2 p( }. V9 i- T- E0 N9 R
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
" o5 v( _6 a$ ithe differential for international graduate students.
. ?3 K/ `0 C; m+ k; r) a* I! W1 z( e: t# H$ e/ S
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an 2 U# d: ~4 h& u% R. i: B9 Z0 v M0 _
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to 2 W8 ^5 G0 I' A, Z
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students # B& f0 e+ S& K V5 \1 w
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At 3 @7 \4 A' G; E0 a
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 3 X8 y6 B% _. S. {
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected % Y+ z5 E2 F* ]+ u: V
increases once they are here.1 L1 ?# K3 v, v' I" j

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the 6 J0 K( {7 f) x% X5 O
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I & r% }2 [: A z" e: }$ j0 {
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that y% d$ m/ a! K2 `3 y% D$ w
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
0 F7 w& E- |2 A# I- Bincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
