When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and

680 CAD(everything was included), believe it or not the same apartment

3 X8 h3 } H! i8 [# n( wdifferential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this,
, C4 o% X8 E! Rthe fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers 1 l$ i7 U0 Y& A: Y) t& |
and most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were
" R5 ~' O/ V5 C0 ~' ]& {6 ]asked to look for a residence on open market.

* p) _4 E+ J& R4 [5 eWhile the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has + [, ~" O& W7 d3 z
increased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid
* m/ W: T9 I: H' O5 ]exactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our
! |; m# G6 D9 Y8 badmission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students ( I6 F" b! I' a. l
=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after
7 E. K7 r/ }5 K5 m7 ]/ x% rtuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just 5 D* [6 V I3 V: t* e5 b+ X& L
imagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am
7 I$ r6 m. P$ n( W) q! p) egetting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of
/ ?, [) J9 R/ m* Pus) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was . P Y: E) V I3 x
admitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.

Also have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of ; w1 I, m- e, G V
Alberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants 7 _! d; n+ b/ @
from different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate
4 T7 u* j$ x# K f. B+ l" lstudents are the main pillars of research work at the university.

My objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention
) s# |/ `) {9 ?. l/ O( Mis to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and 6 t0 V2 R5 ~: e! @4 P7 C8 T1 o1 j2 X
especially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take: y1 ?6 C% u6 x% P7 I* m- D
0 z( k* Y; [7 v# Q
initiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for
4 \: F* a! O! g3 H" ]2 u+ e& ^4 Dgraduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?
! ~9 U: }9 x2 S& B, {$ v/ G0 u3 M. }' U9 F% Q) t! o! y: L& ]( y- a# b
